Game Overview

The BC Lions (0-1) host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) in a pivotal early season matchup to open up the Leos' regular season home schedule. After last week's 28-18 loss in Calgary, the Lions have now dropped their last two meaningful outings including 2007's West Division Final versus the Riders.

The Leos did not look like the confident veteran crew that piled-up 14 wins a year ago and head coach Wally Buono took last Thursday's defeat on himself saying, "The club was not prepared and that is my fault." With that in mind, observers at practice this week can attest to the high tempo and rededication to preparation' by Buono and his staff.

The Riders enter Friday's tilt after a convincing 34-13 win over the Edmonton Eskimos and quickly erased for now the pre-season notion that they might be battling the Eskimos for a playoff berth this fall. An 18-point fourth quarter outburst by the Roughrider offence has also given supporters of Big Green confidence that the expected drop off in production in the absence of QB Kerry Joseph may not be happening just yet. In an odd twist, first year head coaches Ken Miller, Marc Trestman, Rich Stubler and John Hufnagel all picked up their first career victories last week.

Offensively, the Lions will look to establish a more fluid offence after having to abandon the run in the face of 14-1 and 17-1 first half deficits. Starting quarterback Buck Pierce took another shot last Thursday to a throwing shoulder that has seen its share of rough treatment already this year. Pierce had decent numbers through the first half, going 9 of 14 for 160 yards with a TD but will make way for Jarious Jackson on Friday. Jackson didn't have much luck in the second half versus the Stamps and ended the night 8 of 18 for 95 yards, 1 TD and an interception.

Up front, the Lions will look to tighten things up after surrendering four sacks last week. The return of Rob Murphy has been short-lived after wife Amy summoned his return for the birth of their triplets in Florida on Tuesday night. The Lions were hoping their arrival and their father's departure would take place after Friday's West Division match-up with a Saskatchewan front four that was in Ricky Ray's face all night last week. "We will play with the players that are here and wish Rob the best,' said Buono. The Leos will also have to adjust for the absence of Sherko Haji-Rasouli after the veteran guard strained his hamstring early in the loss to Calgary - Dean Valli will fill his spot on the offensive line.

At receiver, Geroy Simon started his defence as the CFL's receiving leader with a 68-yard performance a week ago. The veteran slotback was also on the receiving end of a stiff hit delivered by Calgary's Calvin Bannister. Simon will have fond memories of his last regular season game versus Saskatchewan catching the game winning touchdown with just 33 seconds left to seal a 37-34 victory. Paris Jackson started the 2008 campaign with a five-catch, 93 yard performance including a 45-yard strike. Jason Clermont was held to just 19 yards on three receptions while second year Cory Rodgers enjoyed a career night with a three-catch, 63-yard, two touchdown performance.

At running back, Joe Smith was on track for a nice outing with 44 rushing yards on seven carries in the first half versus the Stamps, but as the scoreboard turned in Calgary's favour, the Leos moved away from the run and Smith added just 10 more yards in the second half. Establishing the running game versus Saskatchewan won't be an easy chore as the Riders come into Friday's game having given up just 59 yards on the ground.

On defence, coordinator Mike Benevides counted no less than 15 missed tackles in the loss to Calgary, a statistic that is not sitting well with his staff. Defensive linemen Brent Johnson, Tyrone Williams, Aaron Hunt and Cam Wake were held off the sack charts for the first time in recent memory and had tough time stopping a Calgary rushing attack that rolled up 197 yards including 125 by Joffrey Reynolds. They now face a Saskatchewan ground game looking to get Wes Cates even more involved after a 14-carry, 86-yard, 2 TD performance versus Edmonton. One bright note for the D-line was Brent Johnson's late interception and 20-yard ramble which gave the Leos some hope of a comeback; a sign perhaps that the slimmed-down version of the 2006 Most Outstanding Defensive Player is ready for a terrific 2008 season.

At linebacker, Javier Glatt enjoyed a good performance in his hometown with eight tackles as well as a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. McMaster-grad Jason Pottinger saw six reps as the Leos' third linebacker alongside Glatt and Otis Floyd and has shown positive development going into his third season. Jamall Johnson returns to the active roster this week for Wally Buono at the expense of Tim Goodwell who was released Tuesday. The Lions added former Rider linebacker T.J. Stancil to the practice roster on Monday.

The Lions secondary was under pressure most of the night last week with Henry Burris enjoying plenty of time to deliver the ball on time and on target. Dante Marsh seemed to attract plenty of attention last week, but his seven tackles and pass knockdown demonstrated his aggressive play still demands respect. His partners in the defensive backfield will need to tighten their game versus Saskatchewan after QB Marcus Crandell put up 278 passing yards and two TD's last week. His favourite target was newcomer Adarius Bowman who racked up 112 yards on six receptions including a 73-yard TD.

On special teams, kicker Paul McCallum was not pleased with his performance last week from a punting perspective. With a pregame windstorm and a 56 km/h breeze at kickoff, criticism may be unfair. Look for the 16-year vet to bounce back in climate-friendly BC Place. One positive note on special teams for the Lions has been the noticeable lack of flags on returns; last Thursday that meant 188 positive yards on kick returns stayed positive.

From the book on obvious, the Lions do not want to drop two games back of the Riders in the West Division and likely still have a disappointing finish to the 2007 season on their minds. It may only be the second game of a young 2008 season, but July 4th will very likely result in some fireworks on the field Friday night.

  • Week 15: Saturday Night Matchup

    SATURDAY, JULY 5, 2008 - Selland Arena (5,487) 10:00 P.M. ET

Week 15 concludes on Saturday night with an intrastate rivalry as the Stockton Lightning travel to Fresno, Calif. to tackle Central Valley. This will be the fourth matchup of the season between these two clubs. In the first three matchups the Coyotes have looked impressive, winning by an average of 23.3 points per contest. In their last meeting in Stockton, Central Valley won 51-29. The Coyotes defense played a big part in the victory by pressuring QB ANDY COLLINS into two interceptions and sacking him four times. Stockton, a team that had lost four straight, earned a 47-41 upset win in overtime at then No. 7 Tennessee Valley. Collins had a stellar performance with seven TD passes spread amongst three different receivers. Rookie WR/DB TROY MCBROOM had a stellar debut with 10 catches, four for touchdowns, for 110 yards receiving. The Lightning defense also stepped up big. DB RUSCHARD DODD-MASTERS had two interceptions to lead the group individually. WR JUSTIN TAPLIN has been the team's top receiver since his arrival seven weeks ago. In six games, the former AFL player has 40 grabs for 558 yards and is tied for the team lead with 10 TDs. LB JAJUAN HUDDLESTON has been the Lightning's spark on defense with a team-best 52.5 tackles and four fumble recoveries. He is also tied with LB JASON HUNT for the team lead in sacks with six. The Coyotes, currently ranked No. 11 in the latest league coaches poll, are coming off a tough, 56-54, loss at No. 2-ranked Spokane. The Coyotes are also currently placed in the No. 6 position in the playoff standings and are looking toward securing their third straight playoff berth. That's what makes this week's game so important to Central Valley. Second-year QB CLAY GROEFSEMA has started the past four games and had his best individual performance against the Shock. He completed 21-of-27 passes against Spokane with five passing touchdowns and two rushing scores. Groefsema has a lot of weapons at his disposal, specifically receivers like JASON BARNES, TONAE MARTIN, NICHIREN FLOWERS and JOMO WILSON. Flowers leads the group in catches and yards while Martin leads in touchdowns. Wilson is also a big time threat on kick returns. He has three kickoff return TDs in 2008 and paces the Coyotes with 1,810 all-purpose yards. On the defensive side, veteran LB WES BORBA will look to continue to make plays on the defensive side for the Coyotes. Borba leads the team in tackles (50), interceptions (6) and fumble recoveries (3). The defensive line has two strong pass rushers in DONYELL BOOKER (9 TFLs, 7 sacks) and BEN MCCOMBS (8 TFLs, 7 sacks). In nine overall head-to-head meetings, Central Valley is 8-1 against the Lightning. Stockton will need another stellar effort from Collins and company to keep up with the quick-strike Coyotes.

Alum Donovan Morgan Named AFL Rookie of the Year

CHICAGO - The arenafootball2 league (af2) announced today that former Tulsa Talons standout and current Chicago Rush WR DONOVAN MORGAN (6-2, 200, LA - Lafayette) was selected as the 2008 AFL Rookie of the Year as voted by AFL head coaches, fans, players and the Arena Football League Writers Association (AFLWA). Morgan played two af2 seasons (2005, 2007) in Tulsa before breaking onto the AFL scene this year.

Morgan, who won Rookie of the Month honors in June and was voted to the All-Rookie team last week, led all rookies in receptions (113), receiving yards (1,300), yards from scrimmage (1,336) and first downs (78). He also led the Rush in those categories in addition to sharing the team lead in total touchdowns (25; 24 - receiving, 1 - rushing) with long-time League standout DAMIAN HARRELL. Morgan's play helped pace Chicago to an 11-5 regular season record, a Central Division title and a bye in the first round of the 2008 AFL playoffs. Last year in just six games with the Talons, Morgan caught 48 passes for 512 yards and 13 TDs before leaving to play with the Buffalo Bills. In 2005, the New Orleans, La. native was named the af2 Rookie of the Year after catching 121 passes for 1,687 yards and 54 touchdowns with Tulsa before signing with the Houston Texans and seeing action in three games.

Other Rookie of the Year candidates this season included: Georgia WR TIGER JONES, Grand Rapids WR/DB CHRIS MARTIN, New Orleans LB NORMAN LEJEUNE and New York DB LEVY BROWN. Jones, Martin and Brown began their Arena Football careers in the af2 as well.

Morgan joins BRETT DIETZ (af2 Louisville), CHARLES FREDERICK (af2 Spokane) and TROY BERGERON (af2 Columbus) as former af2 players who went on to earn AFL Rookie of the Year honors. Dietz and Frederick were co-winners in 2007 while Bergeron won the award in 2005.

  • Bryant Slowly Making Way Back After Season-Ending Injury

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's ORSHAWANTE BRYANT ( 6-0, 201, Portland State) was set to have a break-out season.

He worked out harder in the offseason than he had done in previous years. He got stronger, faster and put on 15-20 additional pounds.

"I did a lot of leg work to make sure my body was ready to go, and I put on some extra weight in case I had to play the defensive spot again," he said. "I worked hard for the season expecting to have a big season not only for the team but for myself as well."

Two days in training camp in preparation for the 2008 season, Bryant ruptured the Achilles tendon in his left foot, and was sidelined before the season ever began.

"I was coming in motion and I tried to plant and take off at the same time and maybe I put too much pressure on it. I didn't think it was as bad as it was because it felt like I tweaked something," he said. "When I turned to go back into the huddle that's when I realized I couldn't take another step."

Three days later he had surgery, and now five months after the procedure he is slowing getting better. He still hasn't been cleared to run, but the range of motion in his foot is nearly 80 percent.

"It's been going well. It's been slow, but we're making progress," he said. "I'm struggling with my strength, but hopefully that will come in the next couple of months."

In 2006, Bryant, who spent the first four years of his career with the Arizona Rattlers, recorded 90 catches for 1,039 yard and 11 touchdowns, while defensively he had 58 tackles and two interceptions for the Blaze.

In 2007, he had 24 catches for 331 yards and five touchdowns, while defensively he had 28.5 tackles and a team-high five interceptions.

Bryant spent what would have been his seventh season in the league just watching.

The Blaze started the season 0-9, and it was hard for him. He watched the games from home in Phoenix on the television or followed them on the internet.

"It was really tough because I was trying to be a part of every aspect of the team and the organization and I came home and I was disappointed that I couldn't stay up there for the season," he said.

"I felt if I would have been able to be out there I would have been some sort of asset to the team, whether it was on or off the field."

Following the rough start, the Blaze won six of their next seven games and got into the playoffs for the third time in the three-year history of the franchise.

Bryant was in the stands when the Blaze (6-11) lost in the Wild Card Round of the Arena Football League Playoffs to the Colorado Crush, 49-44, in their first-ever home playoff game, but he doesn't plan on spending time in the bleachers next season.

"First of all I want to stay healthy and as long as my rehab goes well I will get to 100 percent," he said. "(I want) to help us get a little further in the playoffs and finish the run to the ArenaBowl."
