Orlando escapes with 58-51 victory over Kansas City

Kansas City, MO - Shane Stafford did just enough for the Orlando Predators (8-4) to escape with a 58-51 victory over the Kansas City Brigade (2-9). Stafford threw the game winning six yard touchdown pass to Ron Johnson with four seconds remaining to quiet the 10,992 fans inside Sprint Center.

Orlando was far from perfect in their seven point victory over the Brigade. Shane Stafford and company committed five turnovers on their way to picking up their eight win of the 2008 AFL season. Stafford finished the game 22 of 34 for 305 yards and six total touchdowns. T.T. Toliver and Ron Johnson combined for 149 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Odie Anderson added 37 rushing yards as the Predators out gained Kansas City by 122 yards.

The Orlando defense provided constant pressure on quarterback D Bryant and his offensive lineman. Bryant committed three turnovers and was sacked three times by the AFL's fourth ranked defense. Former Brigade players B.J. Cohen and Kenny McEntyre enjoyed their first trip to the Sprint Center. McEntyre intercepted his sixth pass of the season mid way through the fourth quarter. B.J. Cohen turned in the play of the game when he recovered a D Bryant fumble in the Kansas City end-zone for a touchdown. The Cohen touchdown occurred with zero seconds left in the first half and gave Orlando a 35-31 lead at half. Cohen would add a half sack in the game.

The Kansas City defense forced a season high five turnovers on Sunday. However the defensive stops were not enough to provide Kansas City with a win. Kansas City's only passing touchdown came on their first play from scrimmage, Bryant found Jerel Myers for a 37 yard touchdown reception to tie things up at 7-7. Rookie quarterback D Bryant struggled to hold on to the football in his seventh career start. Bryant coughed up the football twice and threw one interception. Bryant also recovered his third fumble in the Kansas City end-zone to provide Orlando with a safety.

For the second week in a row Jerel Myers ignited the Brigade faithful with a 54 yard kick-off return for a touchdown. Myers' return opened the second half and regained some of the momentum that was lost at the end of the first half. Kansas City would only add 13 points for the remainder the game.

Kansas City (2-9) has a quick turnaround as they head to the city of brotherly love for a Thursday match-up with the Philadelphia Soul (10-2). Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST. Orlando (8-4) will welcome the Dallas Desperados (9-2) to the sunshine state for a Friday contest.
