Coming off their Divisional Round playoff win that featured a spectacular ending, the Philadelphia Soul are set to have a local street named after them. Conshohocken, a borough located in southern Pennsylvania about 15 miles from Philadelphia will be re-naming one of its streets this coming Wednesday, July 9 during the Soul's National Conference Championship Game Pep Rally in the parking lot at Totaro's Restaurant. The pep-rally, which will feature Soul players and coaches, Soulmates and the mascot Soulman, will begin at 6 p.m. with the official unveiling of the street re-naming starting at 7:15 p.m. Conshohocken Mayor Joseph Collins will also be on hand to declare the street re-naming as the Soul Drive towards Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII continues.
SOUL WALK PRESENTED BY SATURN TO TAKE PLACE TOMORROW
History is going to be made in Philadelphia on July 12th, 2008. The Philadelphia Soul host the Cleveland Gladiators in the Soul's first trip to the Arena Football League's National Conference Game on their drive to Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII. To kick off the celebration, the Soul's season ticket holders, fans, Soulman, staff and players venture from the Coliseum in Voorhees, NJ to the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia to deliver the game ball in preparation for Saturday's big game. Different fans will be lined along the way and the game ball will be handed off fan to fan for the duration of the 18 mile trip with Saturn cars and motorcycles helping with stretches of the trip. WHAT'S UP TODAY Practice today was outside for the first time this week. Before practice the players and coaches went through regular meetings and film sessions. Various players will be attending the pep rally tonight at Totaro's.
HE SAID IT Cleveland coach Mike Wilpolt on the key to winning in Philadelphia during his ESPN interview yesterday: "We've got to eliminate the big plays that they are capable of doing, and we got to get after their quarterback. We have confidence going up there and playing them because last time we were there they beat us by one point, and we didn't make a two-point conversion. So we know its going to be a tough pass in Philadelphia, but we are excited as an organization to have this opportunity and be one of the final four teams left."
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Cleveland Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt was named the AFL Coach of the Year on Tuesday as voted by AFL head coaches, players, fans, and the Arena Football Writers Association. Wilpolt, in his first season at the helm in Cleveland, enjoyed a 9-7 regular season, a huge turnaround for a franchise that went 2-14 in 2007. Wilpolt's only other head coaching experience came in 2004 season when he was named the interim head coach of Indiana Firebirds in week 6 and lead them to a 8-3 record. Philadelphia Soul coach Bret Munsey was a finalist in the voting, along with Arizona's Kevin Guy and Chicago's Mike Hohensee. Munsey led the Soul to the franchise's first division title and an AFL-best 13-3 record this season...Utah Blaze owner John Garff announced Wednesday the promotion of assistant coach Ron James to head coach. James will replace former Blaze coach Danny White, who resigned last week after going 21-30 in three seasons with the Blaze.
The following AFL awards are scheduled to be announced this week: ADT Defensive Player of the Year will be announced later today, and Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday...
