Schwartze, who just completed his fifth season as a member of head coach Mike Hohensee's staff, has served as the team's defensive backs coach for the last five years and has overseen the team's player personnel since 2005.
"I'm excited to have Brian take full control of our defense," said Hohensee. "He is an outstanding coach who has called all of our coverages in the secondary for the past five years. He now will get the chance to have his influence on the entire defense."
Schwartze replaces defensive coordinator/line coach Walt Housman, who leaves the organization after eight seasons. A search for a new line coach is underway.
"Walt was a member of my staff for the last 10 seasons, dating back to our time together in New England," Hohensee said. "The entire organization wishes him well."
In addition, wide receivers coach/special teams coordinator Ryan Leonard and fullback/linebackers coach Bob McMillen will return for the 2009 season.
