Stamps And Lions Tangle Saturday

The Calgary Stampeders conclude the regular season on Saturday afternoon against the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium and have already assured themselves a first place finish in the CFL's West Division. The game is themed Fan Appreciation Day and Stamps fans will be saluted throughout the afternoon for their continued support of the Red and White.

Following the game, 42 lucky fans will be on the field for the Jersey Off Our Backs promotion. Each Stampeders player who participates in Saturday's game will give his autographed gameworn jersey to a randomly selected Stamps fan.

Calgary has top spot in the West Division locked up and will host either BC or Saskatchewan in the West Final on Nov. 15. The Lions currently are tied with Saskatchewan for second in the West and need to win or have Saskatchewan lose against Toronto on Thursday in order to host the West Semi-Final on Nov. 8.

The Stamps (12-5) have won three in a row and seven of their last eight games while the Lions (11-6) have won two straight and seven of their last eight. The teams face each other for the third time this season and the Stamps won both previous meetings. They won 28-18 at home in the season opener on June 26 and then 36-29 in Vancouver on Aug. 22.

Prior to the game, fans are encouraged to donate new or gently used jackets in support of the Sixth Annual Salvation Army Coat Drive. Volunteers will be positioned at each entrance gate to accept coats or cash donations for the cause. Stamps fans helped to contribute 1,300 jackets and $5,000 in cash last year, bringing the five-year total to 5,420 coats and over $8,500 raised.

Tickets are still available for this game and the West Final and fans are encouraged to call Ticketmaster at 403.777.0000 or go online to Ticketmaster.ca to get their tickets.

Blue Bombers Offer Fund-Raising Opportunity To Local Groups

WINNIPEG, MB -The Winnipeg Football Club is offering an opportunity for groups aged 14-and-over to have a chance to fundraise for the last two home games of 2008.

The Blue Bombers are looking to recruit teams to potentially be involved with snow removal inside Canad Inns Stadium. The upcoming two home contests are scheduled for November 1, and the CFL East Semi-Final on November 8, 2008.

Because of the unpredictable nature of the weather in Winnipeg, there is a chance of snowfall prior to either of the two remaining games. This is why the football club is extending the opportunity to organizations who are interested in raising money.

The donations will be structured as $8.50 per hour, per person. The football club will distribute shovels upon arrival.

This opportunity is dependent on the weather conditions over the next two weeks. If snowfall occurs prior to the Nov. 1 regular season finale or Nov. 8 CFL East Semi-Final, crews would be required at 6 a.m. that morning.

Organizations interested in using this potential opportunity for fundraising purposes can contact Kevin Austin at 204-784-7417 or kaustin@bluebombers.com

Outstanding Lions nominated for 2008 player awards

The local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada has named its BC Lions nominees for the Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards.

Cam Wake was a unanimous selection as the club's Outstanding Player and Outstanding Defensive Player. In just his second season, Wake has terrorized opposing defenses to the tune of 20 sacks, 60 defensive tackles and a blocked field goal. The nomination comes on the heels of Wake's winning both the Outstanding Defensive Player and Outstanding Rookie award in 2007.

Receiver Paris Jackson earns the unanimous selection as the Lions' Outstanding Canadian with his 73 receptions for 1,149 yards and seven TD's. The slick sixth-year wide out who was named Canadian of the Week three times during the 2008 campaign as well as Canadian of the Month in July has made a seamless transition to slot back in recent weeks after 2007 Outstanding Canadian Jason Clermont went down with a knee injury.

Jason Jimenez gets his first nomination as the Lions' Outstanding Lineman after anchoring the line from his right tackle position. Jimenez in tandem with two-time Outstanding Lineman Rob Murphy head up the CFL's most intimidating offensive line and have powered the Lions to more than 900 yards of offence and 92 points in the last two games.

Shifty running back Stefan Logan is a unanimous choice as the club's Outstanding Rookie after racking up 751 yards on 106 carries. The five-foot, seven-inch ball of speed splashed onto the CFL scene in Week 3 with an 18-carry, 143-yard performance that made him an instant team and fan favourite. The first-year Leo has a lofty 7.1-yard per carry average and has also returned nine kickoffs for 266 yards (29.6 avg).

Ian Smart takes home his second nomination for Outstanding Special Teams Player in as many years. Currently leading the CFL in kickoff return yardage (66, 1,646) and sitting third in punt returns (78, 731) Smart has consistently provided the Lions offence with great field position. Now in his third season, Smart was named CFL Special Teams Player of the Week after his July 25th performance which included a dazzling 91 yard kickoff return for a TD versus Montreal.

The BC Lions play their final regular season game on the road this Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 pm (PT) versus the Calgary Stampeders. For more information on the BC Lions Football Club, please visit our web site at www.bclions.com.

Desperados Shift To Southern Division For 2009 Season

DALLAS, Texas - The Dallas Desperados will join the AFL's Southern Division for the 2009 season as part of the league's new realignment, leaving the Eastern Division where the team won two division championships in back-to-back seasons (2006-07) to join a Southern Division that will pit them against new divisional foes in the Georgia Force, Orlando Predators and Tampa Bay Storm.

"It's two difficult divisions, comparing what we've played in and what we're now going to," said Desperados Head Coach Will McClay. "We're used to being in a division with Philadelphia, Columbus, Cleveland and New York in the Eastern Division, and now we go to another tough division in the Southern Division that features perennial ArenaBowl teams with Tampa Bay, Orlando and Georgia. So the competition only gets fiercer."

Dallas has moved divisions four times since its inception into the league in 2002 as a member of the West Division while also playing in the Central (2003) and Eastern Divisions (2004-08). The Desperados conclude their record in the Eastern Division with a mark of 24-10 - the best divisional record of any Eastern Division team during that five year span - and were the Eastern Division champions during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The Desperados best season in the Eastern Division came in 2007 when the team set a league record with a 15-1 regular season mark including a perfect 6-0 record in the Eastern Division.

Elfrid Payton Signs One-Day Contract

Montreal, Oct. 25, 2008 - Montreal Alouettes' Vice President and General Manager Jim Popp is pleased to announce that rush end Elfrid Payton has signed a one-day contract to retire as an Alouette.

Payton played 14 seasons in the CFL, including four as an Alouette. In 205 career regular season games, he made a total of 483 tackles, 70 tackles for a loss and 154 sacks, finishing just three short of Grover Covington's league record of 157. He is also the Alouettes' all-time leader with 52 quarterback sacks.

Nicknamed "SWAC," Payton began his career in 1991 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the same team with which he ended his playing days in 2004. In addition to Montreal and Winnipeg, he played for Shreveport, Baltimore, Toronto and Edmonton. He won the Grey Cup twice, in 1993 with the Blue Bombers and in 1995 with the Stallions. He totalled 16 tackles and two quarterback sacks in four Grey Cup appearances.

The Alouettes will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium (RDS, TSN, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD 800, 98,5 FM).

Lions and Argonauts ready to battle Saturday night

The BC Lions (10-6) host the Toronto Argonauts (4-12) in a late season match-up that still has plenty of post season implications as the Lions look to secure a home playoff berth and keep their hopes of a regular season division crown alive.

The Leos come into Saturday's game following an important 43-28 series-clinching victory over the Edmonton Eskimos last Friday. The club has now won six of its last seven games and holds the all-important tie-breaking advantage over division rivals Edmonton and Saskatchewan. Toronto comes into Saturday's game traveling through three time zones and in the midst of a seven-game losing skid. Their most recent setback came at the hands of Montreal last Saturday by a 43-34 margin.

The Leos and Boatmen met earlier in the month with BC holding on for a hard-fought 24-20 win on October 3rd and have not dropped a game to the Double Blue since 2004.

GM and head coach Wally Buono will face his longtime on-field foe Don Mathews as the two bench bosses wrestle for the all-time coaching win title. Buono currently sits second to the 'The Don' with 226 career wins, but has narrowed the gap to just five victories this season.

On offence, quarterback Buck Pierce may look back on October 17, 2008 as the date he established himself as one of the league's bright stars after completing 25 of 40 passes for 378 yards and three-touchdowns. The performance came in the face of a strong Eskimo pass rush not to mention two unnecessary roughness calls on Pierce's former college teammate at New Mexico State, Siddeeq Shabazz. The battered and bruised Lions pivot played the entire second half on a tender ankle, but stood tall in rallying the team to three fourth-quarter scoring drives including two TD passes to Geroy Simon. Look for Pierce to start versus the Argos on Friday as the offence looks to build on its 518-yard showing last week.

Up front, the Lions managed to control the line of scrimmage as well as their emotions going into a testy rematch versus Edmonton. The result was a shutout in the sack department after the Eskimos put four on the board the week previous as well as a 102-yard rushing performance by the resurgent Charles Roberts. A strong ground game and ample time for Buck Pierce to deliver the ball resulted in the team rolling up 33 first downs and maintaining a 12-minute advantage in time of possession. Toronto has notched 27 sacks on the year to rank sixth and has surrendered 2,594 yards on the ground to rank eighth.

At receiver, Geroy Simon bounced back from a one-catch, six-yard performance two weeks ago to rack up 126 yards and two TD's on seven receptions last Friday. Simon currently sits second in receiving yards (72, 1,286) trailing only Calgary's Ken-Yon Rambo (92, 1,314). Paris Jackson enjoyed a spectacular night of his own, hauling in eight receptions for 127 yards as well as a slick 25-yard TD in the first quarter. The lofty total put Jackson over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. Rookie Ryan Grice-Mullen made his pro debut with a three-catch, 52 yard night including a 27-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Running back Charles Roberts also chipped in with 43 yards on three catches.

On defence, the Lions needed and received some help from the offence on the night but also managed some big plays of their own including three turnovers in the win over Edmonton. In what seems like a 'good news, bad news' scenario, the defence limited the Eskimos to just eight offensive plays in the first quarter but one of those plays was a 47-yard passing play to the Esks' Kelly Campbell. Through two quarters, Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray had 214 passing yards with 129 of those yards coming on just three plays. In total, the Lions gave up 367 passing yards on the night while limiting the Eskimo running game to just 32 yards. Trailing 21-17 at halftime, however, the Leos would give up just a single TD in the second half as well as forcing three fumbles (including a blocked field goal) and three punts.

Up front, the defence pushed their league-leading sack total to 58 with Otis Floyd and Ricky Foley getting to Ray. Foley also forced a Ray fumble on his sack which was recovered by teammate Cam Wake. Despite being held without a sack on the night, Wake remained force throughout the game and capped it off with a monstrous field goal block which preserved the 15 point margin of victory for the Lions and the season series versus Edmonton. Fellow lineman Aaron Hunt also had a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter after Ray and running back A.J. Harris got their signals crossed.

When the Eskimos did run it was for limited gains as the D-line and linebacker corps surrendered a total of just 32 yards on the ground. Otis Floyd notched two defensive tackles and a knockdown in addition to his fourth sack of the season while Javy Glatt added four tackles to his total giving him 77 on the year - good enough for fourth overall in the CFL.

In the secondary, the Lions will look for improvement as the post season approaches and big plays can quickly become game breakers. Facing the likes of Ricky Ray with man coverage for a fair chunk of the game is a task not easily executed, especially given Commonwealth Stadium's slippery surface; but holding the Eskimo offence to a single TD in the second half last week is worth noting. Despite Ray's totals over two games, the Lions remain the third-ranked defence versus the pass (4,402, 275.1) and have plenty of playmakers of their own that can turn a game around. They will face a Toronto offence that had some measurable success versus Montreal as Kerry Joseph completed 22 passes for 400 yards and three TD's with no interceptions.

On special teams, kicker Paul McCallum likely had as much to do with the Lions coming up with enough points to take the season series with the Esks. His decision to run for a first down late in the fourth quarter not only kept the Eskimo offence on the bench but helped the Lions to another touchdown. McCallum was also good on all three of his field goal attempts and now sits third overall with 166 points. Return man Ian Smart had a nifty 32-yards dash to open the game and now sits just 94 yards back of Eric Blount's 1,695 return yards mark set in 1998.

The Lions have placed themselves in position to take a run at first place, however, they will need to focus their efforts versus an Argonaut club playing for jobs in 2009 and hope to get some help from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as they take on the Stamps.

EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Indoor Football League organization announced on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 from the El Paso County Coliseum that Brian Brents has been named the head coach for the 2009 season. Coach Brents is a native of Crane, Texas and along with his wife Rachel, has a 5 month old son named Tyson Matthew. Brian played wide receiver for Abilene Christian University, and completed his degree at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

"I'm excited to be taking over as head coach for the El Paso team. My family and I are happy to be a part of the El Paso community and I can't wait to get to work on building a successful team that hopefully will be around for some time as a member of the Indoor Football League." stated Head Coach Brian Brents.

Brents helped build the Odessa Roughnecks, of the now Indoor Football League, into a playoff caliber team in 2004. He returned to Odessa in 2005 as the offensive coordinator and was a major part of a Roughnecks team that finished the regular season undefeated, and complete an overall record of 16-1. In 2006, Brents contributed in turning around the Lakeland Thunderbolts from a 6-9 squad to a 13-3 divisional championship team.

"Brian is a very experienced coach of the indoor football game, and success has followed him with every team he has worked with during his coaching career. Shock anchor offensive line with Lorenzo Breland

Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock announced today that OL Lorenzo Breland has been added to their 2009 roster.

Breland finished his collegiate career at Jackson State in 2007 and is expected to compete for the starting center position vacated by Center Rico Ochoa, who retired last season.

Yard Dawgz Assigned Highly Touted QB

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and Head Coach Sparky McEwen continue to strengthen the roster as they prepare for the 2009 season. The most recent assignments include highly touted QB Robert Kent, FB/LB Freddie Rollins, and DB Andre Burns.

Kent (6'5, 220), a three-year af2 veteran, led the 2008 Lubbock Renegades to a 9-7 regular season record and the franchise's first post-season appearance. Kent was one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the league completing 274-of-505 passes for 4,100 yards and only 8 interceptions. He was also the team's second leading rusher with 189 yards and 16 TDs.

"Kent has proven that not only can he put up big numbers statistically, but he can also lead an organization to the playoffs," said McEwen. "His signing gives Oklahoma City an AFL caliber quarterback and I look forward to continuing his development and growth as a young quarterback."

Kent was in the top 10 in all major passing categories including passing yards per completion (1st; 15.0 yards/completion), passing yards (3rd; 4,100 yards), passing TDs (4th; 86 TDs), and total offense (5th; 268.1 yards/game). He was named the af2's Schutt Offensive Player of the Week in the Renegades Week 9 win over the Texas Copperheads.

"I'm very excited to work with Coach McEwen next season," commented Kent. "Oklahoma City is on its way up and finished strong in 2009. I know the fans, players, and coaching staff are ready for the season and are ready to win."

In his career, Kent has thrown for 9,458 yards and 196 TDs for the Alabama Steeldogs and Lubbock Renegades.

A four-year starter at Jackson State, Kent set school records for pass attempts (825), completions (1,539), passing yards (11,797) and passing TDs (104). Kent also attended training camp with the NFL's Tennessee Titans in 2004.

Rollins (6'1, 275) exploded onto the scene in 2008, where he played in 9 games for the Yard Dawgz and became the team all-time leader for rushing yards (227) and TDs (14). Rollins ended the 2008 season as the af2's 3rd leading rusher, averaging 25.2 rushing yards per game. He played for Mary-Hardin Baylor where he was a three time All-Conference running back.

Burns (6'0, 190) played in 15 games for the Yard Dawgz last season and was the team's leading defender with 63 solo and 26 assisted tackles (76.0 total). He also had 2.5 tackles for a loss, 5 interceptions for 71 yards, 14 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble. Burns returned 11 kicks for 137 yards. In 2007, Burns played for the af2's Laredo Lobos and Rio Grande Valley Dorados where he collected 40 solo and 11 assisted tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 1 sack, 7 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions.

Burns was previously on the training camp roster for the AFL's Dallas Desperados, New York Dragons, and Colorado Crush. During his senior year at Missouri Western State, Burns was on the All-MIAA defensive 1st Team and the All-Southwest Region 3rd Team.

World Champion Philadelphia Soul Rooting For Phillies In World Series

Philadelphia, PA (October 22, 2008) - This past July, the Philadelphia Soul brought to Philadelphia something the city has been thirsting for -- a World Championship. On the brink of the Phillies beginning the World Series tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Soul couldn't be more excited to root for another team to bring home a championship to the City of Brotherly Love.

Many Soul players are rooting on their fellow Philadelphia team. "Even though I'm not from this area, after playing for the Soul I feel like a part of the Philadelphia family," DB Rob Keefe says. "I want to see the Phillies win the World Series just to see the faces of the rest of the Phillies fans as they watch another parade go through the city this year."

OL Phil Bogle shares the same sentiment as Keefe. "It's a great accomplishment," he said when asked about his thoughts on the Phillies. "It's another possibility of a championship in Philly. I've been embraced by Philadelphia and I've embraced Philadelphia right back."

But who do they think will end up on top at the end of the World Series? "I think the Phillies are hot right now, although Tampa is playing well. The way that guys like Shane Victorino are playing and the way pitching is with guys like Cole Hamels, it's great. The Phillies will pull it out," Bogle predicts.

Soul Head Coach Bret Munsey has started following the Phillies over the past three years while he's been with the Soul and has enjoyed watching them grow. "Manager Charlie Manuel and the Phillies organization have come a long way getting great character people both on and off the field. It would be another great achievement for the great fans of Philadelphia."

Though there's a debate on whether the Soul really broke the "curse" in Philadelphia, it's evident that winning ways are going to continue on with the City of Brotherly Love and the Soul are rooting for the Phillies the whole way.

Go Phillies!

The Soul celebrated their fifth anniversary this season with a 59-56 win over the San Jose SaberCats in Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII. The Soul drew a total of 131,817 fans this season, their largest number since their inaugural season of 2004. The Soul sold out four games in the 2008 season and averaged 16,477 fans per game. Season tickets for the 2009 campaign are currently on sale starting at just $59. Call 888-PHIL-AFL to order your tickets and get more information on the defending ArenaBowl Champion Philadelphia Soul.

Since their inception, the Soul have drawn a total of 646,043 fans, the most in the AFL over that time frame. Following the 2007 season, the Soul were recognized with the Commissioner's Award as the Organization of the Year and were an honorable mention for the PRISM Award in the category of fan appreciation.

Kabongo brings his powerful presence from the football field to the community

(Edmonton) A staple along the offensive line, Patrick Kabongo is also a staple in the community. The 5th year Eskimo will be this year's recipient of the David Boone Award, the club announced today.

Kabongo has taken part in over 40 community events this year including nine Comfree Stay in School appearances; seven DARE program visits and several Read-In-Week appearances to both French and English speaking schools. Patrick has also given a lot of his time to help young football players by taking part in several minor football practices and the Boston Pizza High School Football Camp. "Patrick is a dedicated individual who gives his time to the community selflessly," says Eskimo President and CEO Rick LeLacheur. "He is a great role model for the people in the community and to his teammates."

Patrick's goodwill goes beyond the local community. Before the 2006 season, Kabongo traveled to tsunami-ravaged Sri Lanka on a mission where he helped with a mobile clinic and ran a sports camp for local children.

Chosen by his teammates, the David Boone Award is given to the player who has a strong involvement with the community. Kabongo will be presented with the award at the 45th Annual Edmonton Eskimo Dinner this evening. He is also the Eskimo nominee for the CFLPA's Tom Pate Memorial Award for a player's outstanding contributions to the league, his team and his community. Chris Morris takes his place on Eskimo Wall of Honour at Commonwealth Stadium

(Edmonton) Edmonton Eskimo President and CEO Rick LeLacheur today announced that former offensive lineman Chris Morris will be the 25th player in team history to have his name added to the prestigious Wall of Honour at Commonwealth Stadium.

A first round draft pick (8th overall) by Edmonton in the 1992 CFL Draft, Morris starred at the University of Toronto. Morris cracked the veteran laden Eskimo line-up and was in the starting line-up for the opening game of the '92 season. He would keep that job for the next 14 years, playing a key role in Edmonton's Grey Cup titles in 1993, 2003 and 2005.

In making the announcement, Rick LeLacheur says, "It's fitting that as the Edmonton Eskimos celebrate 60 seasons, we honour the player who wore #60 with such distinction for 14 of those seasons. Chris earned the admiration of his teammates, coaches and opponents with his leadership, toughness and competitive spirit. He is most deserving of this honour."

Morris says, "I never played football for the personal attention or accolades, so I am very humbled by this".

He joins former teammates Gizmo Williams (2002), Willie Pless (2004) and Rod Connop (2005) as the most recent inductees to the Wall of Honour.

Morris will be honoured at the 45th Annual Edmonton Eskimo Dinner on Wednesday, October 22 and during a special halftime ceremony at the October 31 game vs. Montreal.

Riverrats announce tryouts

ERIE, PA - (10/20/08) With many American Indoor Football Association teams already having tryouts, the Erie Riverrats wanted to make prospective players aware of the Riverrats' plans for tryouts for their 2009 team. With the season not expected to begin until March 2009, the Riverrats plan on hosting tryouts after the finish of most of the local college football seasons in early 2009. The Rats wanted prospective players to be aware of the tryout schedule so players don't get worried they may have missed their chance to become a Riverrat and so prospective players don't get too hasty in signing with other clubs.

Erie Riverrats head coach Steven G. Folmar explained the team's reason for pushing the tryouts back, "I know many teams are already having tryouts right now but we want the opportunity to see the best talent available, and our staff believes that to do that, we need to have the largest pool of talent possible to choose from. Because of that, we decided we needed to allow guys playing college football right now the opportunity to finish their seasons and heal up minor aches and pains before we see them and we go about finalizing our roster." The Riverrats expect to have tryouts in Buffalo, NY, Cleveland, OH, as well as in the Erie area. The Rats hope to finalize and make announcement of the actual dates of their upcoming tryouts within the next few weeks. Check back to our webpage for staff and player signings to begin soon as well!

Montreal, Oct. 15, 2008 - The Canadian Football League announced today that Montreal Alouettes' receivers Jamel Richardson and Ben Cahoon have been named, respectively, the Offensive and Canadian Players of the Week for Week 16.

Richardson - Offensive Player of the Week

Richardson continued his outstanding season, catching 12 passes for 125 yards and tying a single-game team record with three receiving touchdowns. Richardson's trio of majors allowed him to take the CFL lead for scores this season with 13.

Anthony Calvillo was runner-up for the Offensive Player of the Week award as he was 33-for-41 for 371 yards and three touchdowns passes in Monday's 42-11 win over the Tiger-Cats at Montreal's Percival Molson Stadium.

Cahoon - Defensive Player of the Week

Cahoon tied a single-game team record with 13 receptions on Monday, which he converted to 164 yards and a touchdown. With that, he has now surpassed the 1,000 yards receiving mark for an eight time, setting a new Alouette record.

Linebacker Reggie Hunt was named runner up for Defensive Player of the Week after totalling one interception and six tackles against the Ticats.

The Alouettes will visit the Argonauts at Toronto's Rogers Centre this Saturday at 3 p.m. (RDS, TSN, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD).

DeAngelis and Collins Honoured

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that kicker Sandro DeAngelis and defensive back Milton Collins have been recognized by the Canadian Football League as players of the week for their efforts in last Monday's 42-5 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

DeAngelis made four of five field goal attempts and four converts to earn special-teams player of the week honours. He has made 46 of 53 (86.8 per cent) field goals attempted in his fourth season with the team and is the most accurate kicker in CFL history, hitting 83.9 per cent (172 of 205) of his field goals.

Stamps defensive lineman Justin Phillips was runner-up for special-teams honours.

Collins had two interceptions, one quarterback sack and three tackles in his second start of the season, to earn the nod as defensive player of the week. He has suited up in seven games for the Stamps this season after being converted to defensive back from receiver in training camp.

"The win over Saskatchewan on Monday was our best team effort of the season," said head coach/general manger John Hufnagel. "Both of these individuals played extremely well and I'm happy that they were able to receive this acknowledgement from the CFL."

This is the second such honour for DeAngelis this year and Collins' first of the season. Quarterback Henry Burris (offensive) was honoured in Week 12, while DeAngelis and defensive end Mike Labinjo (defensive) were recognized in Week 9.

CFL names Grey Cup halftime entertainment

Toronto, ON - (October 13, 2008) - The Canadian Football League is turning to Canadian stars Theory of a Deadman, Suzie McNeil and AndrŠ¹e Watters to rock the Diet Pepsi Grey Cup Halftime Show.

"This entire year has been a celebration of our league, our country, and the bond between the two - past, present and, most importantly, future," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.

"So it makes perfect sense to cap the season by celebrating young Canadian artists on our country's biggest stage, centre-field at the Grey Cup, the nation's largest single sporting event."

Theory of a Deadman is a dynamic rock band originally from North Delta, British Columbia. With seven Top 10 charting singles, two Platinum albums, and their newest release, Scars and Souvenirs, already having been certified Gold, they bring fitting rock anthem power to halftime.

Band members Tyler Connolly, Dave Brenner and Dean Back got their break when Connelly gave one of their demo tapes to Nickelback's Chad Kroeger who, upon listening to their songs, quickly signed the band to his 604 Records label.

Currently touring, Theory is scheduled to appear via satellite feed today on TSN, at halftime of the Thanksgiving Day Classic between the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (kickoff at 1 p.m. eastern).

Mississauga-born Suzie McNeil first made Canadians proud when she was the last woman standing on CBS reality show Rock Star: INXS. A 2008 Juno Nominee in the category of "Best New Artist", Suzie starred as Oz in the Toronto debut production of "We Will Rock You." Her Top 10 hit single "Believe" has been featured on "Oprah" and is in the running to become the anthem of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Twenty-five year old singer-songwriter AndrŠ¹e Watters is looking forward to taking the Grey Cup stage in her home province. She is a two-time winner of the Quebec FŠ¹lix Award, the French language version of the Canadian Juno Awards. She won for best rock album of the year in 2003 for AW and in 2006 for Š Travers. This year, the title song of her third album, Minuit, quickly rose to number one on the radio and video charts, as did a second single, Tout De Moi. Born in Quebec City, Watters moved to Montreal as a teen. She has starred in the musical theatre production of Dracula and played herself in the theatrical movie sensation Š Vos Marques, Party!

"Diet Pepsi is proud to be the title sponsor of the halftime show, proud of our reputation as one of the country's most dynamic and youthful brands, and especially proud to rock the halftime show with this caliber of talent," said Dale Hooper, Vice President, Marketing, Pepsi-QTG Canada.

"These young Canadians epitomize the spirit of youth in much the same way that the Diet Pepsi brand does. They took bold steps to get noticed. They're successful. And they're ready for this massive opportunity, a moment that promises to be exciting, electric and, like the Grey Cup itself, profoundly Canadian."

Montreal's Olympic Stadium is the site of the 96th Grey Cup game on November 23rd. It's the very first broadcast by the CFL's now exclusive television partner, TSN. The Grey Cup game will also be broadcast on RDS in the French language.

"Just as the CFL binds one region to another and one Canadian to another, the Grey Cup brings Canadians together in a very moving and powerful way," Cohon said.

"So we've brought these young stars from different parts of the country together, to collaborate in a way that will thrill our fans at the stadium, entertain the millions of Canadians watching on TSN and RDS, and make us all proud."

Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock announced today that OL Joel Clinger has been added to their 2009 roster.

Clinger, 6-6 320, completed his collegiate career in 2006 at the University of Missouri with 24 regular season consecutive starts (a streak that began his junior season). His senior season he was named to the 1st-Team All-Big 12 after receiving an Honorable Mention in 2005.

Blizzard Have New In-state Rival

The Green Bay Blizzard has an in-state rival in the newest member of the arenafootball2 (af2) league, the Milwaukee Iron.

The Milwaukee Iron was officially announced today by the af2 League office. The Iron will begin play in the af2 in 2009.

"This will be great for the Green Bay Blizzard franchise and Green Bay Blizzard fans to have a team in Milwaukee," comments Blizzard General Manager Jim Kraft. "This will be a natural rivalry, and add more excitement, having two state teams in such close proximity."

The Iron were forged by an operating group led by DREW VALLOZZI, whose family owned and operated Milwaukee's only other Arena Football team, the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League. The Mustangs called Milwaukee home for eight AFL seasons from 1994-2001.

When the af2 began in 2000, a rule was put in place that granted AFL teams the ability to purchase af2 team rights in their market. Thanks to that rule, the Milwaukee Mustangs group purchased the af2 rights to the Madison, Wisc. market; which the AFL at that time determined was in the Milwaukee Mustangs territory.

The ownership group has since decided that this year was the right time to exercise their right to activate the Madison af2 market. That group also decided that this team would play in Milwaukee at the Bradley Center and be known formally as the Milwaukee Iron.

""We (af2) are excited to announce that Arena Football will be returning to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with the Milwaukee Iron as the newest member of the af2 family," said af2 President Jerry Kurz. "I have the utmost confidence in this operating group's commitment to run a top-notch organization both on and off the field, one that the great fans of Southeast Wisconsin will enjoy for many years to come."

Another year; another success

(Edmonton) For the second year in a row, the Eskimo Women's Dinner was a complete success. A sold out crowd of over 500 women were entertained with video presentations, musical performances, wonderful speakers and a spectacular four "quarter" meal. An incredible $45,000 was raised from proceeds involved with the dinner, which includes the $10,000 raised from the green helmet auction.

This year, it was announced that the women of Eskimo football has created the Edmonton Eskimo Women's Ovarian Cancer Research Endowment Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide long term sustainable funding for ovarian cancer research. The Edmonton Eskimo Women are committed to a minimum investment of $100,000 over a three year period. These funds will be made available to physician-researchers who practice at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women in the area of gynecological oncology.

"The Fund will help us to continue our fight against ovarian cancer all year long," says Joan Forge, Eskimo Women's Dinner Chair. "This is a monumental step towards finding a cure for this awful disease and with the support we received through the Eskimo Women's Dinner and other initiatives we will be able to reach our three year commitment with no problems."

"The success of the dinner and the announcement of the Endowment Fund are monumental for ovarian cancer research," says Lynn Mandel, Eskimo Women's Dinner Honorary Co-Chair. "The impact the dinner has made on awareness for this silent disease in itself is enormous. With continual success and support like this, we can expect much advancement in ovarian cancer research."

Honorary Co-Chair, Marie Stelmach was pleased with the success of the dinner and with how the women of Eskimo football, sponsors and the community all pulled together. "Thank you to all the women of the community for making this evening such a success. Together we can make a difference."

Esks And Bombers Renew Hostilities Saturday

The 7-6 Esks return to Commonwealth with last Friday's 30-23 loss to the 5-8 Bombers still fresh in their minds. There is no shortage of pre-game hype thanks to the fines handed down after a late game fight that started with Agustin Barrenechea's hit on Bomber quarterback Kevin Glenn.

Every game in the CFL West from now to the end of the season has playoff "implications". Edmonton sits fourth in the division, a mere four points out of top spot, but the Esks have hit a bit of a mid/late season slump, dropping three of their last four. Edmonton's special teams unit, arguably the CFL's best early this season, was burned last Friday on Jason Armstead's 84-yard punt return. Edmonton's offence showed indications of a return to early season form as Ricky Ray went deep early to Maurice Mann and Greg Prator on the games' opening drive.

"Probably a month ago we were probably the best team in the CFL according to many and right now there are four points separating four different teams," says Head Coach Danny Maciocia. "I know it's all gloom and doom, but there is still a lot of football out there and we feel pretty good about our chances. We have four teams in the west with a winning record and it might come down to the last weekend."

At his current pace, Cahoon has a chance to register his second career 100-reception season and an eighth year of over 1,000 receiving yards. Should he break that mark, he'll be tied with Saskatchewan legends Ray Elgaard and Don Narcisse for fifth on the CFL's all-time 1,000-receiving-yards-seasons list. Cahoon is currently on a streak of 104 consecutive games with at least one reception.

Cahoon is a two-time winner of the East Division and CFL Most Outstanding Canadian Award.

The Alouettes will play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Ivor Wynne Stadium (RDS, TSN, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD, 98,5 FM).
