May 2, 2008 Meat Wrapper

The states of Nebraska and Kansas definitely enjoy their football as they compose one-quarter of the teams in NCAA's Big XII Conference. In addition, the cities of Omaha and Wichita can claim four Heisman Trophy winners between them. Given this football-crazy mindset, the Omaha BEEF will host the Wichita Wild will meet this Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The meeting between the rivals will be the second of three this season. The teams met in Wichita on April 10th with the BEEF winning 31-24 and will meet again in Wichita on May 31st.

Omaha is coming off a 38-23 win over the Colorado Ice last Saturday evening at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Leading the way for the BEEF were quarterback James McNear had 239 yards of total offense (62 rushing and 177 passing) and three total touchdowns (one rushing, two passing) to lead the offense. The defense provided a solid effort as they tallied three tackles for loss and an interception, recovered a fumble, broke up four passes and also blocked a kick. On special teams, Ricky Lebeda contributed seven points and David Horne had two returns (a missed field goal for 40 yards and a kickoff for 22 yards) that both started BEEF scoring drives.

Wichita is coming off a loss, falling to the Billings Outlaws 55-13 last Saturday at the Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. The Wild are 1-6 in their first season in United Indoor Football after playing last season as an independent.

The game, which will begin at 7 p.m., is being promoted as "Ladies Night." The first 1,000 women through the doors will receive a carnation from the team. Kids and families are encouraged to come to the game early and enjoy the BEEF Boardwalk complete with clowns, face painting and inflatable games provided by Bobo's Bouncy Town.

NEARLY 2,700 PEOPLE HAVE BLED FOR THE BEEF

The "Bleed for the BEEF" campaign is doing well. According to officials with the Red Cross, 2,692 people donated blood from April 5th to April 24th,. This is a great accomplishment as last year the number of donations during the same period was 1,150. Keep up the good work, Omaha! The BEEF continue to invite their fans as well as the general public to donate blood. To be able to donate, donors must meet the following qualifications: must be at least 17 years old (16 in Nebraska with a signed Red Cross parental/guardian consent form), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. During the campaign, anyone who donates will receive a 2-for-1 ticket voucher to be used at any of the team's remaining home games this season. For more information about blood donation, please contact the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or log on to www.givebloodgivelife.org. There will be a special ceremony during the team's May 17th game to honor those who have donated as well as honor Red Cross employees and staff. The campaign runs until May 31st.
