  • L.A. Avengers sign quarterback Sam Keller

LOS ANGELES -- Quarterback Sam Keller, fresh off a record-setting season at the University of Nebraska, signed a free agent contract with the Avengers on Friday. He inked a three-year deal that will keep him with the club through the 2010 Arena Football League season.

Keller (6-foot-4, 235 pounds) threw for 2,422 yards and 14 touchdowns in nine games last season for Nebraska. Before a shoulder injury cut his senior season short, he was 205-of-325 (63.1 percent), setting Cornhusker single-season and career records for completion percentage. Keller also established a new school record for passing yards per game at 269.1. Against Ball State on Sept. 22, 2007, he was 29-of-37 for 438 yards and three touchdowns.

"Sam had a high completion percentage in college and that's exactly what you need in the AFL," Avenger head coach Ed Hodgkiss said. "His accomplishments are even more impressive when you consider that he has played for a pair of high-level collegiate programs. We are really excited to see what he might be able to do for us in the future."

Keller transferred to Nebraska after playing three seasons at Arizona State University. In his entire collegiate career, he was 425-of-703 (60.5 percent) for 5,440 yards and 40 touchdowns, with a passing efficiency rating of 138.3.

During his junior season at ASU in 2005, Keller threw for 2,165 yards and 20 touchdowns in seven games, before suffering a season-ending hand injury. Against LSU on Sept. 10, 2005, he was 35-of-56 for 461 yards and four touchdowns. Keller's first start for the Sun Devils came as a sophomore in the 2004 Sun Bowl. In a 27-23 victory over Purdue, he was 25-of-45 for 370 yards and three touchdowns on his way to earning "Most Valuable Player" honors. Earlier that season, he came off the bench in six games to throw for 606 yards and five scores. Keller also played in six games as a true freshman, passing for 247 yards and a touchdown.

He played in a total of 19 games (eight starts) for Arizona State and was 220-of-378 for 3,018 yards (58.2 percent, the second highest completion percentage in ASU history) and 26 touchdowns, with only 11 interceptions. As a starter, Keller averaged 316.9 yards per game for the Sun Devils.

Keller attended San Ramon Valley High School (Danville, Calif.), where he was a two-time All-East Bay League and All-Contra Costa Times selection. In 2003, Keller was honored as the "Red Zone Old Spice California State Player of the Year."

His father, Mike, was an All-America linebacker at the University of Michigan and was picked by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 1972 NFL Draft (64th overall selection).

The Avengers (4-8) will host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats (8-5) on Saturday night at STAPLES Center. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the STAPLES Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at laavengers.com or by calling 1-888-AVENGERS.

Thanks to the power of NFT's patented online broadcasting technology, fans across the globe are now be able to bring all the action of af2 football right to their home computer or laptop on a "Free-for-View" basis. Broadcasts began in Week 1 to rave reviews and continue in Week 10 with a 13-game slate.

TALONS TOP WEEK 10 COACHES POLL: The defending ArenaCup Champion Tulsa Talons have maintained the No. 1 ranking in the Week 10 Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced on Wednesday. Tulsa collected 439 of a possible 448 points and 23-of-29 first place votes in securing the top spot for the 10th consecutive week. The Talons (8-0), who enjoyed a bye in Week 9, return to action Saturday night at Bossier-Shreveport (3-5). Tulsa is currently in the midst of a 16-game win streak, counting eight in a row from last season. The Talons recent run of 16 consecutive victories is the longest active win steak in af2 and the third longest in league history. The Spokane Shock (8-0, 412 points, 2 first place votes) maintained their grip on the No. 2 spot for the ninth straight week after earning a 62-42 road win over Austin. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton held firm at the No. 3 position again as well after a bye in Week 9. The Pioneers (7-1, 405 points, 4 first place votes), who play at East Division rival Manchester on Saturday, have won seven straight games by an average of 37.6 points. The Florida Firecats (7-1, 348 points) maintained their position at No. 4 after defeating South Division rival South Georgia for the second time this season, 48-33, at Germain Arena. Lubbock (6-2, 312 points) finishes out the Top-5 this week after an impressive 75-42 road win against Texas.

BOUIS APPROACHING 50: KEVIN BOUIS, in his fourth season as head coach of the Florida Firecats, is currently three wins shy of becoming the eighth coach in af2 history to reach 50 career coaching victories. He currently ranks sixth on the league's all-time win list with 47 career victories. W-B/Scranton Head Coach RICH INGOLD is the league's all-time leader in career coaching wins with 67. Arkansas' CHRIS SIEGFRIED (61) earned his 60th career victory in Week 7 when the Twisters defeated Oklahoma City, 68-25. Austin's BEN BENNETT (59) is just one win shy of the 60 career win plateau.

CARLSON takes over LIGHTNING: The Stockton Lightning announced on Tuesday that CHAD CARLSON has been named Interim Head Coach. He replaces Doug Murray, who compiled a combined record of 8-17 in two seasons (2007-08) with the Lightning. Carlson enters his third af2 head coaching venture after serving as General Manager/Head Coach for the Hawaiian Islanders (2002) and Head Coach of the Bossier City Battle Wings (2003). He compiled an overall record of 6-12 before moving on to serve as a Volunteer Coach for the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush for the remainder of the 2003 season. Carlson, who guided Hawaii to a 4-1 finish in the 2002 season after inheriting the team in the middle of the season, helped the Islanders finish second in the league for red zone offense (83.1 percent), tied for 10th in total offense (4,126 yards) and rank as the af2's leader in rushing offense (852 yards). After Carlson inherited the Islanders offense that averaged 38 points per game through five contests, his offense went on to score an average of 50.4 points per game and finish 13th in af2 scoring offense. Carlson's wife Monica has also been in the news of late. She won NBC's American Gladiators last season and earned the right to become an American Gladiator herself. Monica, a.k.a. "Jet," is now a full-time member of the cast for Season Two, which premiered on May 12.

WILLIAMS, KENT, SCOTT AND SCHOONOVER EARN WEEK 9 HONORS: Boise wide receiver/defensive back DEMOND WILLIAMS, Lubbock quarterback ROBERT KENT and Rio Grande Valley defensive lineman JOHN SCOTT have been named the JLS Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 9 of the 2008 season. In addition to these three awards, the Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 9 goes to Arkansas wide receiver JON SCHOONOVER.

Williams (5-11, 190, Michigan State), had an impressive all-around effort for Boise but it wasn't enough for the Burn on Saturday as the team lost its first home game of 2008, 46-40, against West rival Central Valley. The rookie from Michigan State was a factor on offense, defense and special teams. Williams, used primarily as a kick return specialist and defensive back, also played a role in the passing game against the Coyotes by scoring on a 33-yard strike from QB Royal Gill. The touchdown catch, his first of the season, came on the team's first play from scrimmage. He also scored a touchdown on a 50-yard missed field goal return to open the fourth quarter which gave Boise its last lead of the night, 40-33. Williams also had 95 kickoff return yards (178 all-purpose yards) and registered 7.0 total tackles (6 solo, 2 asst) on defense. This is the first af2 weekly league honor of Williams' career. He leads the Burn in kick return yards (361) and tackles (34). Kent (6-4, 220, Jackson State), now in his third af2 season, had an outstanding individual effort on Friday night for Lubbock in the team's 75-42 road win against Texas. The Jackson State alum completed 22-of-32 passes (68.8 percent) for 410 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Kent's 410 yards passing set a new af2 season-high and ranks as the fifth-highest single game total in league history. He also rushed for two touchdowns to finish with 10 total touchdowns (tied 2008 af2 season-high). This is Kent's second Offensive Player of the Week honor of his career. In addition to this week's award, he was also honored once in 2006 (Week 15) as a member of the Birmingham Steeldogs. Kent currently leads the af2 in total offensive touchdowns (56; 45 passing, 11 rushing), total offense (2,213) and touchdown passes (45). He also ranks second in passing yards (2,156) and seventh in passer rating (115.9). Scott (6-0, 300, Jacksonville State) was an impact player on defense for Rio Grande Valley in the team's, 53-36, Week 9 home victory against Oklahoma City. The rookie defensive lineman from Jacksonville State was a force up front for the Dorados, registering 4.5 tackles (3 solo, 3 asst), including 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Scott also forced two fumbles that Rio Grande Valley recovered for touchdowns. His play was a big reason why the Dorados recorded their second straight win which evened their season record at 4-4. This is the first weekly af2 award of his career. Scott currently ranks second on the team in tackles for loss (6.5) and sacks (3.0). Schoonover (5-10, 195, Missouri Western State) is the Week 9 recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award, a weekly honor that emerged in 2006 to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Schoonover's catch was a leaping, 10-yard touchdown stab in the second quarter of the Twisters' 69-55 road win at Bossier-Shreveport. The third-year player from Missouri Western State had to turn his body to adjust to the ball over his left shoulder and ended up on his back going full speed. Schoonover, who also caught a fourth quarter touchdown, finished with seven catches for 58 yards. This is the second Catch of the Week honor of Schoonover's career. He also earned the award once during the 2006 season (Week 7). Schoonover leads Arkansas in receptions (59) and receiving yards (524) and ranks third in touchdown receptions with seven.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE: This season the af2 continues to maintain its strong international development program, which began in 2003. Currently the league has international athletes from 15 countries on team rosters. This past week (Week 9), 16 international players saw action around the league and four players started for their respective teams (excluding kickers). Two players who stood out from the af2's international talent pool from Week 9 included Corpus Christi WR/DB DAVID GAYTON (Mexico) and Florida WR JAMES PANUI (UK). Gayton had 1.5 tackles, one pass breakup and one interception in the Sharks' 47-38 home win against Daytona Beach. Panui had a game-high 12 catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns in the Firecats' 48-33 home victory South Division rival South Georgia.

NOTABLE NUMBERS FROM WEEK 9: Three players recorded af2 single-game, season-high marks in Week 9. The notable performances are detailed below.

410 Passing yards by Lubbock QB Robert Kent at Texas (5th highest single-game total in af2 history)

42 Points scored by Albany WR Antwun Williams vs. Manchester (3rd highest single-game total in af2 history)

15.5 Tackles by Bossier-Shreveport DB Pete McBride vs. Arkansas (2nd highest single-game total in af2 history)

TALONS & PIONEERS IN THE MIDST OF IMPRESSIVE STREAKS: The Tulsa Talons set a new team record for consecutive wins over two seasons with their 70-34 home win in Week 4 against Oklahoma City. The victory over the Yard Dawgz was Tulsa's 12th straight, counting eight in a row from last season. With another victory in Week 8, the Talons recent run has reached 16 consecutive victories which is the longest active win steak and the third longest in af2 history. Tulsa will have an opportunity to extend their current win streak to 17 when the team plays at Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday. The Talons' have also won 11th straight home games dating back to 2007 which equals the current team record for most consecutive home victories. The 2003 Talons team also won 11 in a row at the Tulsa Convention Center.

As impressive as Tulsa's current home streak is, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has been even better at Wachovia Arena, winning 16 straight games dating back to 2006. The Pioneers current home win streak is tied for the second longest in league history. The last time Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lost a home game was on July 8, 2006 when the Florida Firecats edged the Pioneers, 56-51. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's next opportunity to extend its current home win streak will be in Week 12 when the Pioneers host Tennessee Valley. VETERAN PASSERS TAKE AIM AT ALL-TIME MARKS: When Craig Strickland retired after the 2006 season, many of his league passing records seemed unattainable. This season, however, Florida's CHRIS WALLACE has the potential to move into the top spot of three all-time passing categories: yards, touchdowns and completions. With 218 yards passing in a Week 8 loss at Tennessee Valley, Wallace became just the second player in af2 history to reach 20,000 career passing yards. His current total now stands at 20,363.

QUAD CITY REACHES 100-WIN MARK: The Quad City Steamwheelers, one of three original af2 members still a part of the league in its ninth season, recorded their 100th win overall (including playoffs) in Week 8. The Steamwheelers joined the Tulsa Talons as the only teams in league history to record 100 victories. Below is a breakdown of the five winningest active teams in af2 history.

af2 ALUMNI EARN AFL PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: This week two former af2 standouts were recognized for their efforts in Week 13 of the 2008 AFL season. Dallas Desperados WR/DB WILL PETTIS was named Ironman of the Week and San Jose SaberCats DB MARQUIS FLOYD was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week.

Pettis (6-0, 200, Midwestern St.) accounted for four touchdowns (3 - offense, 1 - defense) and became the first player in AFL history to throw a passing touchdown, register rushing and receiving touchdowns, and return an interception for a touchdown in a single game as the Dallas Desperados (10-2) defeated the Orlando Predators (8-5), 67-41, on Friday. Pettis' three-yard touchdown pass to WR ANTHONY ARMSTRONG tied the game at 14 with 12:02 remaining in the second quarter. His five-yard rushing touchdown on the second play of the third quarter gave the Desperados a 35-28 lead that they would not relinquish. Pettis single-handedly outscored the Predators 18-13 in the second half as Dallas held Orlando to its lowest second-half scoring output of the season. Before his AFL career began in 2003, Pettis played one season in the af2 and was a major player for the Pensacola Barracudas, providing a glimpse into his AFL future. In 2002 with Pensacola, Pettis showed off on both sides of the ball. He finished the year second on the team with 55 catches for 791 yards and 14 touchdowns. Defensively, he led the club with nine interceptions for 47 yards, 34 pass break ups and eight missed field goal returns for 168 yards and a touchdown. He was third on the squad with 36.5 tackles. Floyd (6-2, 192, West Georgia) registered seven tackles, two passes defensed and one interception in the SaberCats 59-42 win over the Crush at HP Pavilion. Floyd recorded a key pass defense on third-and-goal from the SaberCats three-yard line on the final play of the third quarter to force fourth-and-goal. San Jose's defense would stop the Crush on fourth down, notching its fourth defensive stop of the game. The turnover would result in a field goal on the SaberCats next drive, pushing the lead to 10 points. With less than three minutes remaining in the game and Colorado on San Jose's nine-yard line, Floyd intercepted Crush QB JOHN DUTTON and returned the interception 48 yards to the Colorado nine-yard line to seal the victory. Before his AFL career got started in 2006, Floyd spent two years in the af2 with Tennessee Valley (2004) and Rio Grande Valley (2005), earning First-Team All-league honors in 2005. He was also named the af2 Ironman of the Year in 2005. That season, Floyd recorded a team-best 1,452 yards receiving and 29 TDs with 23 rushing yards and four scores on 20 carries. He also registered 47.0 tackles and a team-high nine interceptions on defense.

This season 35 percent (14-of-40) of the AFL's Player of the Week award winners are alumni of the af2.

Williams Enjoys Record Week As Losing Streak Hits Four Games

    2008 Record:

3-5 (2-2 Home, 1-3 Road) - Streak: Lost 4 - Second Place, East Division, American Conference

    Week 9 Recap:

Albany wide receiver Antwun Williams broke a franchise single-game record with seven touchdown receptions, but the Conquest lost to the Manchester Wolves 66-62 Friday night at the Times Union Center. Albany and Manchester traded blows in the first quarter as the Conquest grabbed an early 14-13 lead. Wolves QB James Pinkney went deep twice and connected for touchdown passes of 37 yards and 30 yards, but Albany QB Dan Cole answered with a pair of 14-yard strikes to Antwun Williams. Manchester pulled ahead in the second quarter, out-scoring Albany 26-6, as they cashed in on three Pinkney touchdown passes, one defensive safety and a stunning 53-yard field goal from rookie kicker Chris Koepplin. The Conquest's lone score in the quarter was a one-yard pass from Cole to Williams, as Albany trailed at halftime 39-20.

There was not anything between the two teams in the third quarter as both squads posted 13 points on the board. Cole again found Williams for two more touchdown passes, while Pinkney showed his athleticism with a dazzling 40-yard scramble for a touchdown; he also linked up with Bradley Chavez to put the Wolves ahead 52-33 going into the final quarter. The Conquest mounted a charge in the final 15 minutes, out-scoring Manchester 29-14, at one time closing the gap to three points, but their comeback would fall just short. Pinkney threw for his seventh TD pass and added an eight-yard run for his second rushing touchdown of the game giving Manchester just enough points to snap a six-game losing streak. Newly assigned Albany fullback Agean Robinson scored on a one-yard run, Cole ran for a seven-yard touchdown and Williams caught two more touchdowns for the Conquest, including a record-setting score. With 26 seconds remaining in the game Williams pulled away from a Manchester defensive back and ran under a long bomb from Cole for a 33-yard touchdown reception. The catch was his seventh touchdown reception of the game and it broke an Albany single-game franchise record, which was previously held by Thomas Anthony, who had six receiving touchdowns on June 10th, 2006 against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers.

    Week 10 Preview:

Both Albany and Mahoning Valley are trying to halt skids and find a way to pick up a win. The Conquest have lost four-straight games since their last victory, a 61-49 home win over the Thunder on April 26th. Mahoning Valley beat Albany 59-33 at home in the 2008 season opener, but have not felt the thrill of victory since, losing seven consecutive games. Saturday's game is another do-or-die situation for both teams, who are looking to rally towards a playoff berth.

Mahoning Valley had one positive to take from the last few weeks, a bye week in Week 9, allowing the entire roster to rest and regroup. Thunder will need their three offensive stars to step up this week: FB Tim Murphy, WR Henry Tolbert and WR/LB John Tackmann. Murphy has 23 carries for 198 rushing yards and leads af2 in rushing yards per game (39.6) and yards per carry (8.6). Tolbert is their top all-around threat, leading the team in receiving (38 catches for 451 yards and 11 TDs) and kickoff returns (29 returns for 669 yards and 2 TDs) and he ranks eighth in the league in all-purpose yards per game (165.7). Tackmann leads the team with 36.0 tackles (28 solo, 16 assisted) and is tied for fourth in the league with 10 rushing touchdowns.

This is the fifth All-Time meeting between Albany and Mahoning Valley, with the Thunder holding a 3-1 lead in the series. It is the third of three meetings during the 2008 regular season as the home team won in the previous two games of the year. The Thunder have struggled to find offense over their past two games, putting up a combined 52 points in back-to-back road games against the two Kentucky squads (Lexington Horsemen and Louisville Fire). Louisville's defense kept Mahoning Valley off the scoreboard for two of the four quarters, limiting the Thunder to a mere 8 points over the final three quarters of the game. QB Shane Adler was sacked 7 times in Week 8 by the Fire and has thrown just 3 touchdown passes in his last two starts.

    Starting QB: Shane Adler (#10) - 3 GP, 38-for-100, 507 yards, 5 TDs, 9 INTs, 29.9 QB rating.

Leading Rusher: Tim Murphy (#21) - 5 GP, 23 carries for 198 yards, 4 TDs, 8.6 yards per carry.

Leading Receiver: Henry Tolbert (#3) - 7 GP, 38 catches for 451 yards, 11 TDs, 11.9 yards per catch.

    Leading Tackler: John Tackmann (#5) - 8 GP, 36 tackles (28 solo, 16 assisted), 5 pass break-ups, 1 INT.

Conquest Player of the Week: (Week 9)

    Antwun Williams - WR - #80 11 catches for 130 yards and 7 Touchdowns

Antwun Williams registered 11 receptions for 130 yards and broke a single-game franchise record last Friday when he caught seven touchdown passes from QB Dan Cole. The mark was the highest single game tally ever posted by one Albany wide receiver in the team's seven-year history. Williams' stellar performance out-did the previous record of six TD receptions set by Thomas Anthony on June 10th, 2006 vs. the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. Williams' 11 receptions against Manchester in Week 9 was a 2008 Albany single-game high, equaling Jared Jones' 11-catch effort against the Mahoning Valley Thunder in Week 1.

    Conquest Arrows:

    - A RECORD CATCH - With one catch WR Antwun Williams broke one Conquest franchise record and tied another. Williams' seventh TD reception in Week 9 against Manchester set an Albany record for most touchdown catches in one game, but it also gave him 59 career touchdown receptions with the Conquest, which tied him with Corey Hill (2002-2003) for the most total receiving TDs in franchise history. Williams needs one more TD reception to take over sole possession of the team-record; he had 5 TD catches for Albany in 2006, 33 TDs in 2007 and 21 TDs so far this season.

    - AIR PATROL - DB Brandon Taylor had another interception in Week 9 vs. Manchester. Taylor, the former University of New Hampshire star, has all four of Albany's interceptions this season and he leads the team with 38.5 tackles (29 solo, 19 assisted). The Conquest single-season franchise record is six interceptions held by Brandon Tinson and Henry Baker, who had six interceptions each in the 2002 season.

    - BOCAGE NO FLUKE - WR Chris Bocage continues to show his incredible versatility as an offensive spark plug for the Conquest. For the fifth successive week the USC alum posted 200+ all-purpose yards, piling up 277 yards against the Manchester Wolves in Week 9. Bocage has totaled 1,328 all-purpose yards in six games played, giving him the second highest per-game average in the entire af2 (221.3), trailing the leader by 0.1 yard per game. He is also the only player of the af2's top ten in all-purpose yards that has zero missed field goal returns.

    - FAMILIAR FOE - The Thunder have struggled to find offense over their past two games, putting up a combined 52 points in back-to-back road games against the two Kentucky squads (Lexington Horsemen and Louisville Fire).

    - TACKLING FUEL - Kicker Jason Fralicker had 1.5 tackles (1 solo, 1 assisted) in Week 9 against Manchester to extend his tackling streak to seven successive games with at least one tackle (solo or assisted). Fralicker has 7.5 tackles (6 solo, 3 assisted) in eight games this season, which leads all kickers in af2.

    - BLAZING RETURNS - Rookie WR Chris Bocage has 802 kickoff return yards in six games played this season, putting him on pace to shatter Albany's single-season team record of 1,362 kickoff return yards set by Tony Locke in the 2004 season. Bocage ranks sixth in the af2 in kickoff return yards and is tied for fourth in the league with two kick return touchdowns.

    Soul Weekly Update

SOUL SUFFER LAST-SECOND DEFEAT TO BRIGADE

The Soul fell to 10-3 as an errant snap kept the Soul out of the end zone with Philadelphia trailing 54-47 to Kansas City as time expired on Thursday. The loss was the first by the Soul at home, and coupled with a win by Dallas pushes the Soul out of first place in the Eastern Division. The loss also meant the Soul failed to clinch a playoff spot.

SOUL ENTER MUCH NEEDED BYE WEEK

The Soul enter their bye week losing three of their last four games, including two out of three games over an 11-day period. Now the Soul are off until their match-up in Dallas against the first-place Desperados. The first meeting between Philadelphia and Dallas ended favorably for the Soul. Eddie Moten picked off three passes leading a strong defensive effort in a 57-28 victory in Philadelphia.

    JACKSON CONTINUES ON

Chris "Money" Jackson continues to live up to his nickname for the Soul. Entering Thursday's game against the Kansas City Brigade, Jackson had Soul single-season records for points (234) and touchdowns (39). Jackson's 11-reception, 130-yard, 3-TD effort in the Brigade game makes him the Soul single-season record holder for receptions (112, passing Steve Smith's 107 receptions in 2005) and leaves him 83 receiving yards from passing Charles Pauley (1,473 yards in 2007) for the single-season mark.

    SOUL RELEASE QB GAUNTT

The Soul announced on Friday, May 23, that backup quarterback Glen Gauntt was released. Gauntt was signed by the Soul on May 9, two days after starting quarterback Tony Graziani was placed on the Injured Reserve list. Gauntt spent the last three games behind Matt D'Orazio, only seeing action for one play, a hand-off, against Columbus.

In the contest against the Predators, Pettis became the first player in AFL history to pass for a touchdown, rush for a touchdown, catch a touchdown and return an interception for a touchdown all in a single game.

The reigning 2007 AFL Ironman of the Year finished the game at Orlando with five receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown, two rushes for three yards and a touchdown and was one-of-one for a three-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Anthony Armstrong on his first career passing attempt on offense while also leading the Desperados defensively with five tackles, two pass breakups and returned an interception 42 yards for his first career touchdown.

    Eskimos Trade for O'Mahony

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos today acquired punter Duncan O'Mahony from the Calgary Stampeders for a conditional draft pick in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft.

A veteran of six CFL seasons, O'Mahony (pro: O-man-ee) played in eight regular season games for Calgary in 2007, recording 51 punts for 2158 yards (avg: 42.3) with a long of 65 yards and three singles. In the 2007 CFL West Semi-Final at Saskatchewan, O'Mahony punted six times for 221 yards.

Eskimo Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia says " Duncan is a proven CFL commodity and an excellent directional punter".

The native of Kilkenny, Ireland was a standout at UBC where he was named a first team CIAU All-Canadian in 2000. O'Mahony was selected by the Stampeders in the second round of the 2001 CFL Draft. He played three years with Calgary before he signed with the BC Lions for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. After missing the 2006 season, O'Mahony signed as a free agent with the Stampeders in 2007 where he played in eight games.

Dorados Dominate Yard Dawgz In 53-36 Win

Hidalgo, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Dorados used a team-record 116 rushing yards and took advantage of five Oklahoma City turnovers as they defeated the Yard Dawgz 53-36 victory Saturday night at the Dodge Arena.

Rio put points on the board at the 9:43 mark in the first when Reggie Hargrove recovered a fumble by Yard Dawgz quarterback Evan Gray in the end zone to mark the only scoring in the first quarter.

The Dorados took a 19-9 lead into the half after second quarter scores by Jermaine Carpenter (23-yard reception) and Travis McAlpine (33-yard interception return).

Oklahoma City was able to come within four points of the Dorados at the 11:45 mark in the third quarter on a Freddie Rollins one-yard running TD, but that is the closest they would get. Rio's Pierre Thomas caught a five-yard pass from Travis Cole at 6:20 of the third, followed by a Robert May eight-yard run at 4:08 to pull the Dorados up 32-22 going into the final frame.

Rio increased their lead by 31 with just 6:35 left in the game after an Anthony Chambers 17-yard TD reception, but the Yard Dawgz made a final push. They scored at 3:55 with Evan Gray connecting on a pass to Keaton Graham and then with 50 seconds left on Travis Seaton's 49-yard fumble return.

Rio's Robert May set a team record with 75 rushing yards on six carries, helping the team set records for most rushes (18) and yards (116)

Rio travels to Lubbock to face the Renegades next Saturday, and return home June 7 to take on the Texas Copperheads.

  • Thomas and Destroyers' defense come up big in the second half

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers, presented by Germain, defeated the New York Dragons 43-41 Saturday night on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena in front of 12,842 fans.

With 0:41 left on the clock, New York quarterback Aaron Garcia hit receiver Kevin Swayne for a four-yard touchdown to put the Dragons (6-6) within two points, as the score was 43-41 in Columbus' favor. As Garcia attempted the pass to the back of the end zone, Destroyer defensive back Matt Thomas stepped in front of the Dragon receiver and grabbed the ball to keep the lead and the eventual win in the hands of the Destroyers (3-9).

Columbus wide receiver C.J. Johnson took home Offensive Player of the Game honors, as he recorded a season-high nine receptions for 112 and two touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Nagy had another strong performance as he completed 19-of-32 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns.

In his first game on the defensive side of the ball, Thomas received the Defensive player of the Game award, as he played an extremely important role for the Columbus defense. Thomas finished the game with 7.0 tackles (5UT-4AT). He also added two timely pass breakups that helped force the Dragons to turn the ball over on downs on two-consecutive possessions. His most valuable moment came in the final minute of the game as he intercepted the Garcia pass as the Dragons attempted to tie the game on a two-point conversion.

Early in the first quarter, while Columbus and New York were in the midst of trading touchdowns, Destroyer receiver Derek Lee caught his 100th pass of the season. With the reception, Lee became only the fourth player in Destroyers history to record over 100 receptions in a season. He finished the game with five catches for 55 yards. After the teams traded touchdowns, the quarter ended with a 21-14 deficit for the Destroyers.

The second quarter began with a Columbus drive capped off by a Nate Ilaoa four-yard touchdown run. The score was the rookie's first touchdown in the AFL. Ilaoa finished with 25 yards and one touchdown on six carries before leaving the game late in the third quarter because of a dislocated shoulder. The half ended with a 32-yard field goal off the foot of Mark Lewis as time expired, leaving the score 34-30 in favor of the Dragons.

The Destroyers opened the half with a 10:59, 36-yard touchdown drive. After eight penalties and 18 plays, Nagy took a two-yard rush into the end zone to give the Destroyers their first lead of the game at 36-35.

After New York marched down to the Columbus 10-yardline at the end of the third quarter, the Destroyers defense forced the Dragons to turn the ball over on downs inside of their own 10-yardline. After a Nagy found Calvin Russell for a 40-yard touchdown, the Columbus defense forced New York to turn the ball over on downs after the Dragons had another first-and-goal opportunity.

With time winding down, New York was forced to attempt a two-point conversion with hopes of tying the game at 43, but could not convert. After the Destroyers recovered the Dragon onside kick, and continued to run the clock down with the victory in their grasp.

The Destroyers will return to action May 30 at 8:30 (E.T.) as they travel to New Orleans to take on the VooDoo. Tune into the Destroyers Radio Network and WINK 107.1 at 8 p.m. (ET) as Todd Walker (play-by-play) and Rob Blackman (color analyst) call all the action.

  • Tampa Bay Knocks Off Gladiators, 58-48

Tampa, FL - For the second week in a row the Tampa Bay Storm (6-6) defense came up with a big team effort as it limited the Cleveland Gladiators (7-5) offense to a season-low 202 passing yards in an exciting 58-48 victory at the St. Pete Times Forum Friday night. The Storm defense held its opponent under 50 points for the third time in five games.

Storm quarterback Brett Dietz finished the game with 297 yards passing and six touchdowns as he spread the ball around to seven receivers. Lawrence Samuels, quickly approaching the Arena Football League career reception record of 991 receptions (Barry Wagner), finished the game with nine receptions to bring his career total to 986.

Rookie wide receiver and local Tampa product Tyrone Timmons played his first AFL game in place of an injured Hank Edwards. Timmons (6-4, 220) played well, seven catches for 69 yards and three touchdowns, as the Gladiator defensive backs struggled to match up with his size

Despite good pressure by the Storm defensive line, Gladiators quarterback Raymond Philyaw completed 21-of-27 passes for three touchdowns. His primary target was Otis Amey who finished with a game-high 106 receiving yards on eight receptions.

Cleveland led 19-14 at the end of first quarter on a Robert Redd two-yard fumble return for a touchdown after Tampa bay failed to recover a kickoff. However, Jason Ball failed to convert on two extra point attempts as one hit the cross bar and another was blocked by Marcus "Snowball" Owen, his second this season.

Despite another fumble early in the second quarter Tampa Bay was able to take a two-point lead into the half as the Storm outscored the Gladiators 14-7 in the second stanza. Cleveland opened the scoring as the AFL's leading rusher Marlion Jackson scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns. Tampa Bay responded as Dietz connected with Timmons for his first career touchdown on a fade route in the corner of the endzone. Daryon Brutley recovered the following onside kick, which led to Dietz and Timmons replicating the success from the previous drive to take the lead and momentum into the second half.

Each team scored once in the third quarter as Jackson scored his AFL-leading 19th rushing touchdown and Torrance Marshall scored his first rushing touchdown from two-yards out. Marshall would score one more in the fourth, his 18th, to keep pace with Jackson. However the Storm escaped the third quarter with only a one-point lead after failing to convert a two-point conversion.

The fourth quarter began with a huge defensive stand as Kelvin Kinney tackled Jackson for a one-yard loss on fourth and one at midfield. Tampa Bay capitalized two plays later on a 15-yard touchdown reception by Terrill Shaw. Yet the Gladaitors fought back and converted a two-point conversion on the following drive to tie the game at 41. After Marshall's second touchdown of the game, Seth Marler's kickoff bounced off the goal posts and was recovered by Phil Glover, his third consecutive game with a fumble recovery. Three plays later Dietz connected with Timmons for the third time to put Tampa Bay up 55-41. Cleveland tried to make a game off it scoring with 1:23 left on the clock, however, Samuels recovered the ensuing onside kick and Marler drilled a 23-yard field goal to seal the victory and bring the Storm back to .500 on the season.

    Notes

    * The victory over the Cleveland Gladiators was the 200th victory in franchise history (179 regular season and 21 playoff). That is the most by any franchise in the Arena Football League.

    * Lawrence Samuels recorded nine receptions giving him 986 career receptions, six shy of breaking the AFL all-time mark of 991 set by Barry Wagner and 14 shy of becoming only the sixth receiver in football history to reach 1,000 career receptions. This was also the 199th game of his career.

    * With a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter Torrance Marshall set a new franchise single-season high with 18 rushing touchdowns, breaking the record he set in 2007 with 17 rushing touchdowns.

    * Marshall scored two touchdowns for the fifth consecutive game which ties the AFL record for consecutive multi-touchdown games (Barry Wagner - 2003 and Bernard Hall 1996).

    * Tampa Bay Buccaneer linebacker Derrick Brooks, Cleveland Gladiator minority owner and former Cleveland Brown quarterback Bernie Kosar and the Mayor of Tamp, Pam Iorio, were all in attendance.

    * Marcus Owen's blocked kick in the first quarter was the 10th of his career and moved him into a tie for third most career blocked kicks in the AFL.

    * Tom Briggs recorded his 49th career sack, second most all-time in the AFL.

    * Brett Dietz's first quarter touchdown pass to Terrill Shaw was the 100th of his career.

    * Tampa Bay surrendered three rushing touchdowns for the first time this season and it was the first time since the Storm surrendered four on the ground May 13, 2006 at Nashville.

The Storm travel to Atlanta to face its Southern Division rival Georgia Force Saturday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. in what is a crucial game for each team as they fight to get into the playoffs (620 AM-WDAE). Cleveland hosts the Dallas Desperados who are coming off of a big victory over the Orlando Predators. Kickoff at Quicken Loans Arena is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.

AFL action continues Monday night on ESPN Russell Athletic Monday Night Football as the Georgia Force (6-5) travel to New Orleans (7-4) to take on the VooDoo in the Graveyard at the New Orleans Arena in a Southern Division matchup - 8:00 p.m. (ESPN2 ESPN HD and ESPN360.com).

L.A. Avengers make changes on coaching staff

LOS ANGELES -- Offensive line and fullback coach Bill Dobson has been relieved of his duties with the Los Angeles Avengers effective immediately, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.

Orlando escapes with 58-51 victory over Kansas City

Kansas City, MO - Shane Stafford did just enough for the Orlando Predators (8-4) to escape with a 58-51 victory over the Kansas City Brigade (2-9). Stafford threw the game winning six yard touchdown pass to Ron Johnson with four seconds remaining to quiet the 10,992 fans inside Sprint Center.

Orlando was far from perfect in their seven point victory over the Brigade. Shane Stafford and company committed five turnovers on their way to picking up their eight win of the 2008 AFL season. Stafford finished the game 22 of 34 for 305 yards and six total touchdowns. T.T. Toliver and Ron Johnson combined for 149 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Odie Anderson added 37 rushing yards as the Predators out gained Kansas City by 122 yards.

The Orlando defense provided constant pressure on quarterback D Bryant and his offensive lineman. Bryant committed three turnovers and was sacked three times by the AFL's fourth ranked defense. Former Brigade players B.J. Cohen and Kenny McEntyre enjoyed their first trip to the Sprint Center. McEntyre intercepted his sixth pass of the season mid way through the fourth quarter. B.J. Cohen turned in the play of the game when he recovered a D Bryant fumble in the Kansas City end-zone for a touchdown. The Cohen touchdown occurred with zero seconds left in the first half and gave Orlando a 35-31 lead at half. Cohen would add a half sack in the game.

The Kansas City defense forced a season high five turnovers on Sunday. However the defensive stops were not enough to provide Kansas City with a win. Kansas City's only passing touchdown came on their first play from scrimmage, Bryant found Jerel Myers for a 37 yard touchdown reception to tie things up at 7-7. Rookie quarterback D Bryant struggled to hold on to the football in his seventh career start. Bryant coughed up the football twice and threw one interception. Bryant also recovered his third fumble in the Kansas City end-zone to provide Orlando with a safety.

For the second week in a row Jerel Myers ignited the Brigade faithful with a 54 yard kick-off return for a touchdown. Myers' return opened the second half and regained some of the momentum that was lost at the end of the first half. Kansas City would only add 13 points for the remainder the game.

Kansas City (2-9) has a quick turnaround as they head to the city of brotherly love for a Thursday match-up with the Philadelphia Soul (10-2). Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST. Orlando (8-4) will welcome the Dallas Desperados (9-2) to the sunshine state for a Friday contest.

Tune into ESPN Russell Athletic Monday Night Football when the Los Angeles Avengers (4-7) take on the Chicago Rush (8-2). Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 ET on ESPN2.

    Game Notes:

Jerel Myers returned the opening kick in the second half for a 54 yard touchdown return. It is Myers' second straight game with a kick-off return for a touchdown.

D Bryant's 5 rushing touchdowns were a career and season high.

Kansas City had a season high 83 rushing yards.

Arrion Dixon recorded 2 sacks against Orlando. Dixon now has 2.5 sacks on the season.

Travis Coleman picked up his 3rd interception of the season against the Predators.

Charles Frederick (knee) is eligible to be activated from the injured reserve for the upcoming game against Philadelphia.

There were a combined 8 turnovers during the Brigade vs. Predators game.

Thunder's Only Concern Saturday A Victory

SAN ANGELO, Tex. (May 16, 2008) -- If you came to the Frisco Thunder's web site looking for a discussion about facing the team's former coach and leading wide receiver, click on the link to www.SanAngeloStampede.com and see if they're talking about it. We're not.

The Thunder's priority Saturday is snapping a two-game losing streak, regain some focus and swagger, and remain healthy as the push to the Intense Football League post-season continues.

Frisco (5-4) travels to San Angelo (1-7) in a three-way battle for third place in the IFL standings. The Thunder is also looking for its first road victory on this unique seven-game road swing caused by renovations to the Dr Pepper StarCenter.

Yes, San Angelo is now coached by Jon Loudermilk, who led the Thunder to an inaugural season playoff berth and features Antwuan Courington, who torched IFL defenses for 1,137 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2007.

However, it wouldn't matter if Wade Phillips and T.O. were on the other side of the ball as far as Frisco head coach Troy Esprit is concerned.

``If we take care of business on the field, then everything else takes care of itself off the field,''Esprit said. ``It's a big ball game for us and we have to focus on what we need to do to get a victory.''

The Thunder enters Saturday's game in a bit of an offensive slump, averaging just 33 points in the past two games. Last Saturday's 25 point output against CenTex was the lowest in franchise history. The defense played well, allowing just a first-half first field goal and registering five sacks before the Barracudas eventually pulled away for a 41-25 victory.

``We're playing fairly well on defense, we just need to get a rhythm back on offense,'' Esprit said.

The offense will have to do that without leading receiver Richard Morris, out with an injury.

``I want to keep Richard healthy for the playoff run,'' Esprit. ``Jason Deml is capable of stepping up to be the lead receiving and I've been pleased with Daron Lawrence's play the past two games. We're a bang-upped football team right now, but injuries are part of the game.''

Frisco defeated San Angelo 63-44 in the season opener March 1, but that means little.

``You can't take any team or any game for granted,'' Esprit said. ``We're going to San Angelo intent on getting back on track and playing Frisco Thunder football."

Game time is 7 p.m. CST. Fans can listen live or purchase a video webcast on the Thunder's www.friscothunderifl.com web site or view the live blog on frisco-online.com

    Vena Leads Pioneers Over Conquest

Geisinger MVP Ryan Vena tied his own Pioneers record with ten touchdown passes as Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton blew out the Albany Conquest 69-27 in front of 4,733 at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre.

The two teams traded scores early with the Pioneers scoring on a six yard touchdown pass to Rich Musinski who finished with five catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns.

The Pioneers started the second quarter with a 19 yard touchdown pass to JLS Ironman of the game Larry Kendrick, followed by touchdown passes to Schutt Offensive player of the game Prince Prempeh and to Kendrick again. That point after a touchdown had David Davis taking over as the all-time record holder for most extra points made in a career as he now has 384 one-point points after touchdown.

Chris Bocage then returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but the Pioneers quickly answer with Ryan Vena's third touchdown pass to Larry Kendrick as the two teams score three times in the last thirty seconds of the first half, with the Pioneers taking a 42-14 lead into the locker room.

The second half continued to be a Pioneers defensive assault with ADT defensive player of the game Troy Blackwell and af2 sack leader Isaac Hilton providing sacks. Ryan Vena continued just tossing touchdown passes to Prempeh, Musinski and JJ Outlaw who finished as the Pioneers leading receiver with nine catches for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Vena would finish the scoring for the Pioneers with his third touchdown toss to Prempeh and allowing him to finish 26-32 for 300 yards and 10 touchdowns. Matt Schabert would once again take the final snaps of a Pioneers blowout 69-27. The Pioneers take a 7-1 record into their bye week next week.
