Rush Promotes Schwartze To Defensive Coordinator

July 31, 2008 - The Chicago Rush has promoted assistant coach Brian Schwartze to the position of defensive coordinator, the team announced today.

Schwartze, who just completed his fifth season as a member of head coach Mike Hohensee's staff, has served as the team's defensive backs coach for the last five years and has overseen the team's player personnel since 2005.

"I'm excited to have Brian take full control of our defense," said Hohensee. "He is an outstanding coach who has called all of our coverages in the secondary for the past five years. He now will get the chance to have his influence on the entire defense."

Schwartze replaces defensive coordinator/line coach Walt Housman, who leaves the organization after eight seasons. A search for a new line coach is underway.

"Walt was a member of my staff for the last 10 seasons, dating back to our time together in New England," Hohensee said. "The entire organization wishes him well."

In addition, wide receivers coach/special teams coordinator Ryan Leonard and fullback/linebackers coach Bob McMillen will return for the 2009 season.

  • Yard Dawgz Head Coach Returns for 2009 Season

OKLAHOMA CITY - Fans of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz can expect to return to the playoffs in 2009 with the return of Head Coach Sparky McEwen. McEwen is the fourth Head Coach in franchise history.

Earlier this year, McEwen joined the Yard Dawgz sideline as the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator after a 1-5 start, the worst in franchise history and became the Head Coach a week later. Since taking over in Week 8, McEwen is 4-5 and is looking for his fifth win this weekend over the Amarillo Dusters. Under McEwen's leadership, the Yard Dawgz have turned a dismal offense into a force to be reckoned with. The Dawgz went from averaging 30.3 points per game to 45.3 and increased average offensive yards per game to 217.9 from 184.4.

"Coach McEwen and his staff have done a tremendous job improving the overall quality of Yard Dawgz arena football over the second half of the season," said Yard Dawgz Owner Phil Miller. "We are in the most competitive division of the af2 and need a top notch head coach to take us to the next level. I feel that Coach McEwen's recruiting skills and knowledge of the game make him one of the most highly qualified and talented coaches in all of arena football." "Because of these strengths, I know that we will be ArenaCup contenders next season under the direction of Coach McEwen."

McEwen's first arena football experience was in 1998 as the quarterback for the Arena Football League's Grand Rapids Rampage. McEwen then worked for the organization as a Pro Scout (2000) and Offensive Coordinator and Youth Development Director (2001-2003). McEwen was the Offensive Coordinator during the Yard Dawgz 2004 inaugural season and led the team to 10-6 and to their first of four consecutive playoff appearances. Most recently, he was the Head Coach for the Rampage (2005-2007) before joining the Yard Dawgz earlier this season.

"I'm very excited about the direction of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and the commitment to winning a championship next year," commented McEwen. "The support of the fans and Mr. Miller played a large role in my decision to return and lead this organization into the future."

The Yard Dawgz host the Amarillo Dusters Saturday, July 26th, on Compassionate Care Hospice Field at Ford Center; kick-off is set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets start at only $10 and are available online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 405-235-8288. Esks Look to Close Out Road Trip On Winning Note

Last Sunday's loss to the Toronto Argonauts was more emotional for the Eskimos then a regular loss. Import defensive lineman Fred Perry suffered a horrific injury to his left leg early in the fourth quarter when linemate Jim Davis innocently rolled onto his leg. In light of this injury Perry will be out as the Eskimos take on the Ticats and will be replaced by Brandon Guillory. Friday's game will be the first regular season game Guillory has played in since he suffered a spinal cord contusion during the first pre-season game against Calgary in 2007.

Jim Davis and the rest of the Eskimo defensive line will need to tighten up if they are going to stop Hamilton's deadly combination of Casey Printers and Jesse Lumsden. Lumsden, who missed the Ticats last game against the Lions with a knee strain, has rushed for 361 yards on 48 attempts on the year so far.

Friday's game will be the first time that Jason Maas, Brock Ralph and the Edmonton Eskimos return to Ivor Wynne Stadium since November 3 of last year. The Ticats defeated the Eskimos 21-18 to wrap up the 2007 regular season. For Maas and Ralph, this will be the first time they will be facing their former teammates since being traded to Edmonton. The Eskimos are 1-4 with the Ticats in the last five match ups.

The Esks are looking to end their two-game road trip on a winning note before they head back home to take on the BC Lions on Thursday, July 31st at Commonwealth Stadium.

    Notables

    - Defensive Back Tristan Jackson was named the CFL Special Teams Player of the Week for week four. This is the second week in a row Jackson has been a unanimous selection for the award.

    - The Eskimos are 0-4 in the last 4 games they have played in Ivor Wynne Stadium. The last win was July 5, 2003 (37-20).

    - Jason Tucker needs 2 receptions to tie Tommy Joe Coffey for 6th in career receptions in Eskimo history (389).

    - Ricky Ray needs to yards for 23,000 passing yards in his career.

    - Kamau Peterson needs 6 receptions for 100 receptions in his Eskimos career.

    - Noel Prefontaine needs 14 points for 1000 points in his career (reg.season)

    - Wide receiver Kelly Campbell celebrated his 28th birthday on July 23rd.

LEXINGTON HORSEMEN (9-6) AT QUAD CITY STEAMWHEELERS (7-8)

    THURSDAY, JULY 24, 2008 - i Wireless Center (9,315) 8:00 P.M. ET

The final week of the regular season kicks off with a pivotal Midwest Division tilt as the Lexington Horsemen travel to Moline, Ill. to take on the Quad City Steamwheelers. This is a huge game for both teams, but more so for Quad City. A Steamwheelers win would ensure the team the final available playoff spot in the American Conference. Lexington has already secured a postseason berth. A Horsemen win, however, would keep them mathematically alive to potentially win the Midwest Division and improve their seeding if Green Bay slips up on Saturday night at Mahoning Valley. These two clubs have only met once before and it was a close match, but the Horsemen were able to hold off Quad City, 69-55, in Lexington in Week 9. Lexington got a big enough lead in the first half to secure the win, even though Quad City outscored them in both quarters of the second half. Steamwheelers QB J.J. RATERINK completed 31-of-52 passes for 381 yards and eight TDs while Horsemen QB EDDIE EVISTON threw for 228 yards with a team-record nine TDs. Lexington enters its regular season finale ranked No. 9 in the final league coaches poll. Last week the Horsemen suffered a 54-44 loss at home against Iowa. Lexington's offense was led by Eviston who went 20-of-35 for 202 yards with four touchdowns, and WR JOHN COOPER, who filled in for CHAD SPENCER. Cooper had eight catches for 89 yards and one score. The Horsemen offense also received help from TAVON MCGEE (7-69; 1 TD) and HARRY LEWIS (2 TDs). Trailing at the half, Lexington tied the game twice in the second half but a field goal and last minute TD by the Barnstormers halted the Horsemen comeback. The Steamwheelers also experienced a loss in Week 17. Quad City's defeat came on the road at No. 1-ranked Spokane, 78-50. The Shock took control of the game early on, taking a 56-27 lead at the half and cruised through the final 30 minutes of play. Quad City was led in the loss by Raterink and WR JESSE SCHMIDT. Raterink threw seven TDs without an interception while Schmidt caught seven passes for 108 yards and three TDs. Rookie WR JARRETT BROOKS, playing in his second game, tackle for loss. Schmidt leads the club overall in receiving with 124 catches for 1,740 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also ranks third in the league in scoring with 244 points. Raterink leads the af2 in TD passes (87) and ranks second in passing yards (4,098). With so much at stake, expect the Steamwheelers and their fans to come out fired up. Quad City's hopes, as always, hinge heavily on Raterink's play. The Steamwheelers defensive unit needs to step up as well. Over the last two weeks, they've surrendered 76 points at Iowa and 78 at Spokane. Pressure up front by TYUS JACKSON (12 TFLs, 9 sacks - both team-highs) and ROY RAVENELL (6.5 sacks) will be critical in slowing down the Horsemen.

Wranglers Fall Behind Early, Lose to Dorados 33-17

Hidalgo, Texas --- The Austin Wrangles traveled to Hidalgo, TX for a Southwest Division battle against the Rio Grande Valley Dorados. Coming off an overtime win last week against Lubbock, the Wranglers chase for a division title were cut short by a strong defensive performance by the Dorados in a 33-17 loss. With the first touchdown coming in the third quarter for Austin, the Wranglers found themselves in a fight all night.

The Dorados opened up a 21-3 lead at the half on reception TDs by Anthony Chambers and Eddie Jackson from rookie QB Tiger Lyon. Lyon also called his own number from the 1-yard run to give Rio a 14-3 lead with 48 seconds left in the first quarter. The RGV defense held the Wranglers to a field goal in the first quarter and shut down the Wranglers from the 2-yard line with time winding down in the first half.

The Wranglers cut the lead to 21-10 on a 1-yard run by QB Andy Hall for the only scoring in the third quarter. The Dorados answered back on 4-yard run by Robert May in the fourth quarter for the Rio Grande Valley, upping their lead to 28-10.

Hall hit his favorite receiver on the night, John Roberson, with a 21-yard TD pass, to make it a 28-17 game but that was all the Wranglers could muster against a tough Dorado defense. The Dorados added a safety and Brian Hazelwood field goal to round out the scoring at 33-17.

The Austin Wranglers will feature Fan Appreciate Night on July 26th when they'll wrap up the regular season against the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings at U.S. Army Field at the Frank Erwin Center. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Great seats are still available for the final home game by calling the Austin Wranglers at 512.339.3939 or visiting www.austinwranglers.com.

  • Eskimos look for a repeat win against Toronto in game two of the back-to-back series

The 2-1 Esks head into Sunday's match-up in Toronto looking to sweep the season series worth the Argos and notch their third straight win, something they haven't done since 2005. That year Edmonton reeled off a pair of "hattricks" en route to their 13th Grey Cup victory. Not since 2003 has Edmonton taken both games from Toronto.

Rookie KR/DB Tristan Jackson's third quarter heroics scorched the Argos last Thursday. Jackson put his stamp on the game with an 89 yard interception return for a touchdown off a Kerry Joseph pass, followed five plays later by a 61 yard punt return major. A.J. Harris appears to be the answer to any and all questions about Edmonton's ground game. In his CFL debut, Harris carried 14 times for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Another rookie, WR Kelly Campbell, is rapidly becoming one of Ricky Ray's favorite targets. The former Georgia Tech star an ex-Minnesota Viking had a team leading 71 yards on three catches last week. Second year wideout Fred Stamps is coming off his best game as an Eskimo with five receptions for 65 yards.

Road Warriors: Rather than make the long trek back west after the Toronto game, the Esks will set up in nearby Burlington to prepare for next Friday's game in Hamilton against the Cats.

BWW to Play Roughnecks Playoff Game

The Louisiana Swashbucklers (14-0) will be hosting the Odessa Roughnecks (8-7) for the second round of the 2008 IFL playoffs on Monday, July 21st, 2008 beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Roughnecks fans of the Permian Basin will not have to miss a play as the game will be shown at Buffalo Wild Wings in Odessa located at 4241 N. Grandview Avenue. Fans can also catch the game on the radio at 97 Gold and on the web at B2 Networks. Those that want to catch the web cast can do so by searching the Roughnecks new website at www.RoughnecksIFL.com or at www.B2livetv.com

Odessa is looking to capture its second IFL championship. The Roughnecks are very thankful for the support they have received from the fans of Odessa and Midland this season, and the organization is proud to be involved with all those that will watch and listen to this post-season match-up from the Lake Charles Civic Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

    PRE-GAME STORY -

The last time Odessa traveled to Louisiana the Swashbucklers came out on top 56-37, back on May 24th. However, things have certainly changed as Louisiana has not played a game in 3 weeks and Odessa is heading into Lake Charles on a 3-game winning streak, including a 67-33 playoff win over Frisco. QB Dennis Gile registered 5 touchdown passes in the winning effort and the defense collected 8 sacks, including 5.5 from LB Shomari Earls. Louisiana will be led by QB Alvin Bartie who collected 62 touchdown passes in the regular season. The Swashbucklers defense has allowed just under 30 points a game, but the Roughnecks have been spreading the ball around to perfection as of late. Odessa will need the same performance out of Gile as he did against Frisco. He will look to WR Jimmy Conner and WR Don Robinson as key weapons in the passing game, and the defensive line will have to keep up the pressure on Louisiana in order to control their high-scoring offense.

"We are peaking at the right moment, and everything is going to start up front defensively for us. If we can develop as much pressure as we had against Frisco then I know we have a great chance of pulling off the upset." stated Head Coach Chris Williams.

Further information regarding this or any other topics can be obtained by contacting the Roughnecks front office at (432) 332 - PASS (7277) or by logging onto the Roughnecks brand new website at www.RoughnecksIFL.com.

  • Blaze Dancer Juliet C. Excited for Arenabowl XXII Experience

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze dancer Juliet C. will be the first to tell you that dreams do come true.

As a little girl, Juliet had aspirations of becoming a dancer or cheerleader for a professional sports franchise, and that dream came true this last year when she was named to be a member of the 14-member Blaze Dancers.

After the completion of her first season as a Blaze Dancer she received another honor in being named to the 2008 Aaron's AFL Dream Team, which will perform at ArenaBowl XXII in New Orleans on July 27.

"It was a huge accomplishment and I didn't know it was even going to be possible," she said. "I just worked hard and hoped for that experience and I actually got it. It was awesome."

On June 9, the final Blaze regular-season home game, Juliet, who graduated from Weber High School, found out she had been selected to be part of the team, which will also make appearances in New Orleans prior to the game between the Philadelphia Soul and San Jose SaberCats.

Big Budah, emcee of Blaze home games, made the announcement in the second quarter in Utah's 65-56 win over the Los Angeles Avengers.

"He said my name but it really didn't hit me," she said. "...We (the dance team) knew one person was going to be selected (that night)."

Juliet, who is two years away from getting a degree in Education at Weber State University (Ogden, Utah), will leave for New Orleans on Wednesday, July 23.

She received a DVD of the five dances the team will perform at the game, and has spent the last little while trying to master them.

"It is different learning off a DVD and not being able to ask a question if I didn't understand how (the instructor) did something," she said.

Each of the 17 Arena Football League teams had one of its dancers selected.

"I feel it's a huge accomplishment that every little girl dreams of," she said. "You actually get paid to do something that you love."

Louisville, Ky- In front of 7,428 Fire fans, Major Jerry Abramson and the newly crowned Miss Louisville Fire, Louisville fell to the visiting Albany Conquest 35-41.

Touchdowns and missed PATs were the story for both squads during the first half. The Conquest posted the first six points of the match as Dan Cole connected with Jared Jones for the score. However, a blocked kick by Demetrius Forney would spoil their extra point attempt. Ricardo Lenhart's 21-yard catch set up Louisville's initial touchdown and put him over the 1,000 reception yard mark, making him the eighth player in Fire history to reach this goal. He finished the contest with eight receptions for 71 yards and a score.

Danny Southwick found PNC MVP of the game Lonnell Dewalt with a 4-yard pass in the front of the end zone for the first Louisville score. Dewalt ended the game with seven catches for 112 and three touchdowns. Danny Kight's missed field goal tied the score at six.

Despite Louisville's defensive pressure Cole completed a 25-yard pass to Antwun Williams for the Conquest's second touchdown. Albany kicker Carlos Ojeda missed the field goal attempt setting the score at 12-6.

Dewalt went up strong to pull down a 41-yard reception opening the door for the Fire's second score as Southwick connected with Lenhart on a 3-yard pass in the back of the end zone. Following Kight's second missed field goal, Matt Forbes pulled down a Conquest intended pass in the end zone giving Louisville a chance to take the lead. Unable to score, Albany regained possession as Cole snuck over the goal line marking the score at 18-12 with 5:45 remaining in the first half. Dewalt took in an 8-yard pass for his second score of the evening. A missed two-point conversion would leave the score tied at 18-18. In the final minute of the second quarter ADT Defensive Player of the game Zachariah Babington-Johnson lead an amazing defensive effort completing two consecutive sacks, however, Albany was able to complete a successful touchdown and two point conversion advancing the score to 18-26 at halftime.

With both teams scoreless in the third quarter, Jerome Jones recovered a fumble giving Louisville the ball with 1:50 remaining. Kight completed a successful 30-yard field goal putting the Fire within five. Behind a completed sack by Jerome Jones, the Fire defense stopped the Conquest offense and regained possession on the 20-yard line. On second down Vernard Abrams intercepted Southwick's pass and Chris Bocage made it into the endzone pushing up the Albany lead to 32-21. A hard hit by Fire DB Dominic Ross put an end to William's two point conversion attempt.

With a minute remaining in the game Lenhart pulled down a 19-yard pass on the one yard line. Forney rushed in for the touchdown marking the score at 27-32. Following a failed on side kick Albany regained possession on the 10-yard line with 57 seconds left in the game.

Unable to score, Louisville received the ball back with 30 seconds left in the contest, Aaron Marshall put a 31-yard pass into Lonnell Dewalt's hands for the touchdown and the two point conversion tying the score 35-35. Albany QB Joe DeLuise, who earned Offensive Player of the Game honors, finished 8-10-0-64 and one touchdown. DeLuise scrambled 12-yards for the final touchdown, solidifying their 41-35 victory.

Louisville heads to Wisconsin for their final road game of the 2008 season as they face Midwest conference foe Green Bay Blizzard. The contest kicks off Friday, July 18 at 8:30 P.M. Visit www.louisvillefirefootball.com to view next week's game online.

Fire Try to Avoid Being Conquered

Louisville KY- As the 2008 season winds down the Fire return home following a tough loss and a bye week to face the Albany Conquest on Saturday, July 12 at 7 P.M. Both teams are fighting for the playoffs. The Fire are currently the eight seed in the American Conference and the Conquest are on the outside looking in. Albany has not been eliminated from playoff contention but a lose to the Fire would eliminate them for the 2008 season.

The last time out Louisville dropped a last second 41-42 loss to the Mahoning Valley Thunder in the Chevrolet Centre. As the Fire attempted to tie the contest Thunder defensemen Mike Lane blocked Danny Kight's extra point. A failed on-side kick would allow the Thunder to hold the ball for the final seconds of the game. Matt Bassuener finished 36 of 24 throwing one interception for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Ricardo Lenhart completed 11 receptions for 86 yards and a score, while Aaron Marshall added a 22-yard rushing touchdown with nine seconds on the clock setting up the potential tie.

On the defensive end of the ball Dominic Ross broke up two passes, forced a fumble and completed 2.5 tackles. Tymere Zimmerman added three breaks up, two total tackles while pulling down 10 receptions for 94 yards. Both Matt Forbes and Jerome Jones recorded an interception against the Thunder.

Albany also enters this week's contest coming off a loss. The Conquest fell to the Manchester Wolverines in a 33-50 point defeat in New Hampshire. Albany QB Dan Cole went 21 of 41 for 222 yards and four touchdowns. Wide out Jared Jones led all receivers with seven catches for 58 yards, while Vernard Abrams had a game high of three touchdowns.

The Fire defense will look to step up and shut down a struggling Conquest offense. The defense is third in arenafootball2 in scoring defense allowing 39.6 points a game. They also rank fourth in total defense allowing 237.5 yards per game and the third best pass defense giving up 209.6 yards per game through the air. The defense has also been able to force the opponents into making mistakes. The Fire have forced the most interceptions in the league with 28 and fourth in turnover margin with a positive 18.

"We have to put pressure on their [Albany] quarterback," remarked Fire Head Coach Tommy Johnson. If we can do that we have a good chance to win."

Albany has struggled in recent weeks losing eight of their last nine games. The Conquest rank 20th in scoring offense (45.0 points per game) and total offense (245.2 yards per game).

"It's completely frustrating and I think it's snowballed to the point where it's not just one aspect anymore," stated Albany Head Coach Jeff Hoffman when asked about the inconsistencies of the offense and the defense this year. "All of a sudden Dan starts adjusting to throw the ball a little quicker, the receivers are shortening their routes and everything is out of synch. We'll show some flashes, however we can't have one good series and one bad series and that's how we've been. We need to straighten that out and I think we'll be able to get back on track this week."

Albany has a few players to keep an eye on during the game. Chirs Bocage is a wide receiver that is suppose to return from an injury this week. He leads the team in kick returns and had a team high 13.8 yards per catch. He ranks second in the af2 with 211.0 all-purpose yards per game. Conquest quarterback Dan Cole has struggled since the beginning fo the season, but he is the fouth quarterback in Albany history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season. Currently he ranks fifth on the Albany all-time list with 3,064 yards. The Conquest will also be glad to welcome back tight end Jacob Hobbs. Hobbs has been out since week 6 because he was attending the NFL's New York Giants Rookie/Free Agents Mini Camp.

Matt Forbes looks to increase his interception total for the season. Forbes currently has the most interceptions in the af2 history and is currently working on the Fire single season interception record-currently has 13 interceptions for the season. The Fire will also welcome back University of Louisville product Jerry Spencer to the line-up. Spencer has been out since week 2 when he injured his knee against the Wildcats of South Georgia. Danny Southwick will return to quarterback this week. In two games with the Fire he has completed over 60% of his passes and not thrown an interception. In the Fire's eight seasons there have only been seven receivers that had more than a 1,000 yard receiving seasons. Saturday two current players, Ricardo Lenhart and Lonnell Dewalt will be looking to break the mark, Lenhart has 986 and Dewalt has 948 yards.

This week the Fire are going to go green for the city of Louisville. Green jerseys will be worn by the Fire in honor of Brightside, a non-profit organization that helps clean and maintain the look of Louisville. Following the game the jerseys will be taken off of the players and auctioned to the highest bidders. In addition to the proceeds from the jerseys, the Fire will donate a dollar from every ticket bought by city of Louisville employees.

The Fire is currently in third place in the Midwest division with a 7-6 overall record and a 5-4 conference record. The Conquest maintain a 4-9 overall record and hold the third place position in the American conference, East division. The Soul's All-Arena wide receiver Chris "Money" Jackson was named AFL Offensive Player of the Year today. He also finished second in the league in receptions (140), receiving yards (1719), total touchdowns (49), and points (294). SOUL WALK PRESENTED BY SATURN

To kick off the National Conference Championship Game celebration, the Soul's season ticket holders, fans, Soulman, staff and Soulmates ventured from the Coliseum in Voorhees, NJ to the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia to deliver the game ball in preparation for Saturday's big game. Different fans were lined along the way and the game ball was handed off fan to fan for the duration of the 18 mile trip with Saturn cars and motorcycles helping with stretches of the trip. Later the ball and Soulman made an appearance at Citizen's Bank Park along with the Phillie Phanatic during the seventh-inning stretch.

WHAT'S UP TODAY The Soul took advantage of the beautiful weather again today and practiced outdoors. The team is keeping its focus and concentrating on the task at hand, defeating the Cleveland Gladiators. Practiced was up-tempo as usual as the team went hard in every drill and situation they ran through. Amidst all the intensity and testosterone, defensive linemen Gabe Nyenhuis lightened the mood by jokingly asking, "should we practice the coin toss?" Nyenhuis's sarcastic remark assured the rest of the team that they will indeed be prepared in all assets of the game.

HE SAID IT Rob Keefe demanded that his season not end on Saturday by saying: "Come on, let's go, I don't want this to be my last practice." Keefe informed everyone that he expects to practice well into July and end his season with a win in New Orleans.

We have confidence going up there and playing them because last time we were there they beat us by one point, and we didn't make a two-point conversion. So we know its going to be a tough pass in Philadelphia, but we are excited as an organization to have this opportunity and be one of the final four teams left."

Gladiators Head Coach Mike Wilpolt named 2008 AFL Coach of the Year

CLEVELAND - Cleveland Gladiators Head Coach MIKE WILPOLT has been selected as the 2008 AFL Coach of the Year, as voted by AFL head coaches, fans, players and the Arena Football League Writers Association, the AFL announced today. Wilpolt becomes the first head coach in Gladiators franchise history to earn the honor.

Following a disappointing 2-14 season, Gladiators owner JIM FERRARO named Wilpolt head coach of the Las Vegas Gladiators on September 9, 2007. Wilpolt made the transition to Cleveland when Ferraro moved the team that October.

In just his first season as the Gladiators head coach, Wilpolt guided his team to a 9-7 regular season finish, qualifying for the playoffs for just the fifth time in the 11-year franchise history.

With a 73-70 win over the Georgia Force on Monday night, Wilpolt will lead his team into the National Conference Championship game on Saturday, July 12 at 1 p.m. versus the Philadelphia Soul.

In 2004, Wilpolt took over as the head coach of the Indiana Firebirds, after a dismal 0-5 start to the season under the direction of Steve DeBerg. With Wilpolt, the Firebirds went 8-3 and making him a finalist for the Coach of the Year award.

Other AFL Head Coaches receiving votes in 2008 included Arizona's KEVIN GUY, Chicago's MIKE HOHENSEE and Philadelphia's BRETT MUNSEY.

  • 2008's Done: Frisco Falls To Odessa In Playoffs

ODESSA, Tex. (July 5, 2008) -- The brief ray of hope for the Frisco Thunder quickly faded Saturday night.

After a pair of defensive stops and a solid offensive start gave Frisco an early lead, the Odessa Roughnecks took over and ended the Thunder's season with a 67-33 decision in the opening round of the Intense Football League playoffs upon the seasoned surface of Benny Boyd Field.

Odessa (8-7) will face either Louisiana or Corpus Christi in the semifinals the weekend of July 19-21. Frisco's season ends at 6-9 after a 5-2 start.

Dennis Gile threw for 195 yards and five touchdowns as Odessa Roughnecks scored 36 unanswered points.

The Thunder took a 13-7 lead on Dixie Wooten's 1-yard keeper with 13:46 remaining in the second quarter. Wooten at one point completed seven straight passes, but faded late in the half as Odessa took a 28-13 halftime lead.

Odessa built its lead to 43-13 before Kevin Lenford's 50-yard interception return ended the Frisco scoring drought.

Lenford also scored on a 47-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter for Frisco, who at times had a linebacker at running back and two defensive backs at the wide receiver spots.

Don Robinson caught eight passes for 98 yards and three of Gile's touchdown passes for Odessa, whose defense registered eight sacks and four turnovers.

Wooten finished 11 of 18 for 149 yards and a touchdown to Marcus Stiggers (five catches, 70 yards) in addition to scoring a pair of touchdowns on 1-yard keepers. Chris Glenn had 22 yards rushing on five carries.

    NOTEBOOK

BEST OFFENSE: The Frisco Thunder's best offense was its defense Saturday.

In addition to Kevin Lenford's 50-yard interception return for a touchdown, many of the offense's bright points came from defensive players going on both sides of the ball.

With running backs Ricky Madison and Antwuan Andrews unavailable, linebacker Chris Glenn served as the team's primary ball carrier. His first touch went for a nasty 9-yard gain as he finished with 22 yards before leaving the game with a fourth-quarter ACL injury.

Defensive back Marcus Stiggers started at wide receiver, but that's not much of a stretch since Stiggers played wide receiver for the University of Colorado. Stiggers caught the Thunder's first touchdown and finished with five catches for 70 yards.

Don McGee, another defensive back, has been seeing wide receiving time the past three games.

THAT'S THE TICKET: Kevin Lenford literally was worth the price of a ticket Saturday.

Lenford had to work Saturday and did not ride the team bus to Odessa Friday. Thunder owner Jake Reed purchased him a plane ticket that put the Thunder KR/DB into Midland International Airport an hour before the 7:11 kickoff.

Lenford scored two touchdowns on an interception and kickoff return.

ELITE: Despite the loss, Saturday's playoff game put the Thunder among Intense Football League teams who have made the post-season in every year of their existence. Odessa and Corpus Christi have qualified in all four IFL seasons while defending Louisiana is 3-for-3 since joining the league in 2006. Frisco was the first IFL expansion team to qualify for the playoffs in its inaugural 2007 season.

    2009 SEASON TICKETS FOR SALE

The 2008 Frisco Thunder season has just finished, but it's not to early to start making plans for 2009.

Season ticket plans are now available as the Intense Football League team begins preparations for a third season in a renovated Dr Pepper StarCenter.

For as little as $70, fans can enjoy all seven Thunder home games with amenities such as four additional tickets to bring family and friends, discounts at area businesses and merchandise, and much, much more!

Those who pay in full by October 1 receive a replica home jersey.

"We're now fully focused on 2009,'' said Thunder owner Jake Reed. "We got through the difficult schedule of 2008; now it's time to show the IFL how Frisco and Collin County will support its football team."
